Horrific bus accident kills 2, injures 54

The Nation

PRACHIN BURI: -- Two people were killed and 54 others were wounded when a bus carrying students on a field crashed in Prachin Buri's Na Dee district early this morning.

The chartered bus, which was transporting students from Wang Mhee School in Nakhon Ratchasima's Wang Nam Kheow district to Chanthaburi, was travelling at a high speed through Tambon Bu Phram, when it suffered a brake malfunction, plunged downhill, and crashed into a six-wheel truck and a pickup at 2.40am.

The bus went on to ram trees on the roadside before finally crashing into a large concrete pipeline. The bus driver, Samart Yenmeesombat, was killed on impact.

The injured included 42 students and 11 teachers, a bus conductor and a pickup truck passenger. Another student later died.

Safety standards need to be properly enforced, not by the numbers given to the relevant inspector as a donation toward thier retirement fund, but by a strict safety standard, a week or two ago it was an empty bus in Phuket, now this tragedy involving school students.

Is a brake malfunction a case of driving too fast for the conditions/unable to stop in clear distance ahead?

As the driver is dead this may just be an easy excuse.

Very sad - this bus headed here to Chanthaburi, seems to be a very popular end-of-year trip for pupils/students on Wednesday at one car park at Chao Lao beach there were 13 two-level buses from far-off provinces, more out on the road and further along the beach; this morning saw the first buses heading towards the coast about 8am, having done an overnight trip like this one was to have been.

This one looks to be a much older style bus than most that come here source

'Traveling at a high speed' What's the hurry <deleted> ! And a 'brake malfunction' AGAIN ! The bus companies really need to wake up and set and enforce safety standards because this happens TOO ofteb and it's preventable. These are school kids - just doesn't seem right.

Two people were killed and 54 others were wounded when a bus carrying students on a field crashed in Prachin Buri's Na Dee district early this morning.

1) Why were they driving on a field?

2) Why were they traveling at 2:30 am? The driver would be drunk at that time I think.

If there really was a brake malfunction then I'm sure their "Safety Inspection" report will be investigated I hope. Way to many of these tragedies for years and years here.

What a tragedy RIP and get well soon the injured.

Now, maybe the authorities will enforce safety law?

"Now, maybe the authorities will enforce safety law?"

With Songkran holidays fast approaching, your sentiment is understood, but the answer to your question IMHO is categorically NO!

Business will continue as usual, van, taxi and bus drivers all racing along oblivious to the fact they have other people's lives in their hands.

I very rarely see the police on the roads except where there's a gang of them stopping motorcycle riders without helmets, insurance, licenses etc.

There seems to be a total lack of responsibility among many drivers, particularly those operating public licensed vehicles.

Just stay tuned for the next report of bus, van crash and how many injured/dead.

I hope the families of the dead and injured get over this as soon as possible.

I would imagine that the article should have said "field trip" This means Students taking a trip outside of the school if you are not familiar with the saying.

RIP to the young student

Safety of the the population is always secondary here so these accidents will continue to occur

No one will take responsibility and no one will stand up an demand changes.

Until this happens it is mai pen rai

This is the kind of issue Gov'ts are in power to look after but ...

There is a distinct smell of "who gives a rats back side" and money is cared for more than the

life of the the citizens. They should put all MP's kids on these buses and send them on a tour

of Thailand ... better yet ... send the MP's on these buses ...

See how the people travel .... maybe then they will give two bits ... but I will not hold my breath

I doubt anything will change.

RIP the dead.

You reckon? I can think of one bus driver that won't be killing any more students with his crazy driving.

Sorry...but I don't buy the story about the brakes. It's just another horrific example of reckless & careless driving or an under rested and sleepy driver.

This is a perfect example of why I will not take any over night bus trips. No way!

My condolences to the families of those killed and injured. Believe this though....no changes will be made. Sad!

Probably got the original brakes from when it was built. Not the kind of vehicle that should be driving at "high speed". Or any buses here. What's the speed limit for buses in Thailand?

Again???? sad.png

Well, at least this time, the bus driver didn't flee the scene, never to be heard from or seen again.

Sad and probably totally avoidable accident for those killed and injured.

What's the speed limit for buses in Thailand?

As fast as their wheels and crazy drivers will carry them...

The roads at Na Dee

Told my wife when she got home from work - I said Prachinburi, she fired straight back with "Na Dee?"

She works for a nationwide insurance co and that area well-known for road accidents.

And I'll add here, from an insurance accountant - 'bad, too many ghosts of dead people killed in crashes'

Two threads on this forum about bus crashes at Na Dee: the first one is almost a duplicate of today's one - similar time, same destination

10 October 2008: 21 killed, 27 injured in bus accident in Prachin Buri

The accident happened at 3 am while the bus was running down the hill in Prachin Buri’s Nadee district.

The bus developed a brake malfunction and could not slow down when it was running down the hill on the sharp curve part of Nadee-Kabin Buri Road and the driver decided to slam the bus into a sane dune designed for emergency stop.

They were travelling to a field trip in the coastal province of Chantaburi when the bus overturned at 3:30 am (2030 GMT Thursday).

and

10 April 2007 7 killed, over 40 injured when bus veers off mountainside

PRACHIN BURI: -- An air-conditioned bus veered off a mountainside, killing seven people, one of them a foreigner, police said.
Police said the Nong Khai-Rayong lost control and veered off the road while it was speeding down a mountain road in Nadee district at 2 am.

Why oh why do they not fit governers on these buses? Is it because speed = shorter journey times=more journeys=more profit, and what of the drivers hours? are they not regulated with a tachograph as in Europe?

R.I.P. to the student...sad.png

What disgusting comments about a man who was doing his job - driver you bloody clown. - example of reckless & careless driving or an under rested and sleepy driver. - Good riddance to the driver - he already got what was comming .. - and all this without even an inquiry? Air breaks do fail! Some of you people must be physic to have as much insider information as you do, the physic part can be put down to many disorders but, the comments about a DEAD PERSON (and without an investigation) must be put down to sheer ignorance!!

was travelling at a high speed through Tambon Bu Phram, when it suffered a brake malfunction, plunged downhill, and crashed into a six-wheel truck and a pickup at 2.40am.

Enough said!

What is a brake malfunction? Do brakes stop working all of a sudden, like that?

Or was it a malfunction caused by an excessive speed preventing the vehicle to stop "normally" as it would do at a "normal" speed? In that case, the malfunction can be called "excessive speed"

Yes my brakes malfunctioned.

I needed the brakes to immobilize my bus within 30 meters. But at the speed I was going, the bad brakes needed 300 meters to stop my bus.

Brakes no good. Real bad malfunction....

Not my responsibility.

In this instance, the driver will have to convince Buddha of the veracity of his words...

Too bad he did not go see Buddha all by himself.

RIP.

It used to be a "field" dear, but they paved it! Most schools going on "FIELD TRIPS" travel overnight as there is less traffic and it's cooler, the children sleep on the bus and attend the attraction the following day, to return overnight to their homes! I've been on many and never yet seen a DRUNK DRIVER - in fact the drivers are a great help in looking after the kids

Many people on this forum are quite cognizant of the driving habits of people in Thailand.

And most of them if not all are saddened by the results...
