Songkran Down South?

Featured Replies

I am desperate to avoid the mayhem of Songkran without leaving the country and suspect Had Yai, Songhkla or Sadao might be viable options.

Can anyone advise or comment? Thanks.

Hmmm, that deserves serious consideration. Ta very much.

Presume that one day is the 19th?

I think that you could stay in the Chumphon town and avoid it. I stay near the beach and I can still avoid it:

shop early morning or really late, stay inside during the morning and early afternoon of the holiday friday and saturday.

Here on Samui it's only one day.

Really. Why is that?

19th? Songkran is the 13th. I heard Pattaya has some weird dates but the rest of the country celebrates it on the same day; April 13. And yes, one day. Don't go to touristy areas and it will be one afternoon.

as for why, its always been one day as long as I can remember.

In Pattaya (and some/many other parts of the country) it officially starts on the 13th, in practice probably the 12th, and culminates on the 19th. Total <deleted> nightmare unless your idea of fun is being drenched in ice cold water every time you set foot outside, every day for a week.

Hence my post. Even I could tolerate one day.

Where i stay, near thung wua lang beach, Songran is normally Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is much slower. but Friday/saturday the street is packed and the roads are lined with water buckets. I'm guessing that if you are near certain beaches, the water sports is likely to be extended in the surrounding area?

Afraid I have never heard of thung wua lang beach

pathio, chumphon. Near Cabina resort.

I leave Hat Yai for Songkran, it's not much fun anymore. Go a little further and cross the border into Malaysia, you'll be safe there.

Hat Yai played 2-3 days ever since 2 years ago.

Sadao (Dannok) plays roughly 3 days.

Either stay in Songkla or Dannok for Songkran, or if you're not worried about bombing, then maybe you'd want to stay in Hat Yai.

Hatyai is madness at Songkran for at least 2 days. I am escaping the place tomorrow. Malaysia seems to be quieter this time wai2.gif Been to Nakhon Sri Thammarat few years ago where Songkran was only one day.
