A New Rock Club In Samui

Featured Replies

I am arranging with a well known venue to have at first a monthly but I hope shortly thereafter a bi-monthly rock night featuring local bands. I guess the problem may be the lack of same in Samui, due to the work permit problem, and the size of the place. May therefore have to spend a bit of money getting bands from afar. Anyone have any idea how to find local bands...is there a thai website for samui? I did this in HK for local bands and it was a great success...a non-profit making organsiation set up for the local youths to play music. Would love to do the same here.

I do know of the Springer, and was going to visit. Ditto Pompey Bar. But are there any local bands (apart from the ones with residency at bars) to make this venture possible? Or, as said above, perhaps sponsors could help in bringing bands to samui. Not real name bands, but undiscovered talent.

Surely you've heard of Secret garden and Toddy House...these are where the farangs go to play coz they Jam with the house band who can play just about anything..

http://www.toddyhouse.co.uk

to see who's playing at the moment.

Now there is a new band playing at Springer on Mondays.

With the old singer and bass player from Black Rose.

with respect, I am not looking for the Secret Garden type bands even though I enjoy going there. I was thinking of the young thai bands most likely singing in thai who perhaps haven't got enough songs up their sleeves to play a full set but could play half an hour or so. AND I am talking original music, not insipid copyists. The Underground in HK in HK is successful because every month we have 4 bands of different styles, largely unknown, and people want to see them. I just wonder whether the scene is big enough in samui to justify this.

If your looking for Thai bands that are singing in Thai.

Be aware that the customers that will come is Thai.

You must have some security staff becase they can drink a little to much.

there are a ton of musicians - but I have no idea obout the local songwriting scene - my feeling is that its not exatly blossoming ... I could be wrong, though. I battle of the bands with a copy band would be kind of interesting - especially if you actually play the original over the sound system first ... :o

You might consider bringing bands down from BKK as well - no reason to limit your talent pool strictly to Samui....

Incidentally, I'm in a rock band playing @ Coco Blues now - the Drunken Monkees. Were playing a mix of rock, punk and soul, + do a Rocky Horror Picture Show show on Mondays at 10 - come on down :D
