60-year-old and above to have free BTS rides during Songkran

BANGKOK, 4 April 2013 (NNT) – People who are 60 years old and above will ride BTS trains for free during April 13-15.

Surapong Laoha-unya, Chief Operating Officer of Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company, said the BTS will provide free services to elderly who are 60 years old and above. All they need to do is showing their ID cards at the ticket booth at all stations, while children under 90 centimeters tall will also have the same privilege.

He said the scheme is to help Thais foster relationship in their families, especially for the elderly who are an integral part of them, allowing family members to spend time with one another.

Those who are 60 years old and above will get the free BTS service during April 13-15, from 6 am to 12 am.

that is a good idea.

i like how thai people care for their elderly family members and take grandma with them on the trip to the shopping centre. special when it is so hot outside.

Do the elderly Thai, get a concession , half price, when traveling on public transport, like in other western countries and free trips by rail twice a year, say to the value of 1000klms.

i am not talking about socialist policies. just how families stick here together, including all generations. i heard it is not the same in the west.

Of course this does not include geriatric farangs ie over 60, I assume.

only if you have thai id card. same farang have it.

In the Cinema I just show my Thai driving licence, maybe it's the same?

Nice to know I'm officially 'elderly'.

"Hi -- here's my driver's license, ta bian baan, and tax id. Can I have a free ride?"

"Not for you farang. During Songkran, you pay double!!!"

I'd love to be in BKK over SK in order to give it a whirl.

I am grateful for the half-price MRT travel card and find the BTS quite expensive.

Even though it is relatively expensive, I really do enjoy riding BTS. Just wish they would have extended it to Don Meung before the 1997 financial crash. I lived in Laski for awhile and it would have been sooooo much better than taking the 29 bus to Mo Chit.

A nice gesture. I just hope they can get escalators working. It can be quite a hike from the street to the platform and not all stations have elevators at street level.

I don't know much about this project, but I must say that whenever I've encountered a 'special offer' I think they allow the foreigner with some sort of Thai ID to partake.

They definitely do not allow foreigners to partake in the special fares for retirees and the Songkran promotion, I already checked this as I have Thai I.D.

I always remember my Thai-Chinese multi-millionaire boss treating me to a Thai Traditional massage in Pattaya. They charged him B150 and B500 for me. As he was paying, he moaned like hell.

for an elderly people discount or to prove that you are old enough to see certain movies?

A nice gesture for the elderly. But unfortunately the BTS is always so heavily congested, that most people have to stand like sardins in a can, at all times at the day.

No it's not always that way in the west, but then again I rarely see elderly people begging for money with young kids for company when i cross a footbridge in the uk. However i do see this every day on the central bang na footbridge here. So that's good isn't it, all nicely balanced out.

No, they care for the elderly and someone will always give up a seat, especially the little fat kid. rolleyes.gif

i remember seeing farangs begging on the stairs to bts station. once i bought one an ice cream on a very hot day.

BTS has xenophobic policies. You may be surprised to find that this will be for Thai citizens only. Just like the senior discount BTS card they make available for Thai seniors. They will tell you to your face this is for Thais only and give you that big fake smile that immediately disappears behind a sneer. Have your mobile phone cam running when they deny you for not being Thai and send it to your favourite news and tourism organizations after posting on yourtube. MRT on the other hand is a fair and decent operation.

Nope, not surprised at all.

Google "Welfare state". Not quite so necessary for the older generations to rely on the younger, when you have a half decent welfare state.

To extend it to Don Muang before the 97 crisis it would have to have been specially built for you, BTS didn't open until 1999.

Ratty, Mate ... I am over 60 and run 5 kms in under 30 mins, walk a golf course - 8+kms a week and you are bagging me buddy as 'geriatric? Damn boy, you need yo ass whupped! But I guess I'll let ya off with a warning - this time! biggrin.png

So based on the above you wouldnt need a geriatrics discount or even the physical BTS/MRT then... you can run..tongue.png

It's great to see some of our senior citizens havent lost their sense of humour, unlike the vast majority of the miserable, self-righteous, old whinging ba*t*ards on here..thumbsup.gif

Well there you go, see all cultures are quite prepared to abandon those they no longer have use for.

Even foreigners can get 1/2 price on the MRT (not sure about senior discount for BTS and buses) in Thailand. Traveling by rail is free or near free for any Thai. Although Thailand is not the west, I assume you must be talking about Europe because in the US and Canada the discounts are typically 5 to 15% for seniors.
