Recommended Route To Pattaya From Bkk

Featured Replies

Hi all, am planning to go to Pattaya later in the month. Could someone sugggest a route. Was looking at google earth. Sukhumvit appears to take you all the way to Chonburi but unless I am mistaken it joins up with motorway 3. I would, of course, prefer to avoid main roads. Advice needed.

Thanks

Hi. I am doing BKK to Pattaya again next Monday from Bangna. The best way is all the way down to just outside Chonburi on old Sukhumvit Road which is fairly safe and reasonably good condition road.

There is no choice but to join onto the "new Bangna/Chonburi Bypass" road under the elevated section for approx 3km only and the you can join back onto the old Sukhumvit road properly through Chonburi, Sattahip, etc - and finally into City of Sin!

It is approx 120km from Bangna on this route and takes approx. 4 hours assuming a quick break or two en route for refuels.... And a steady 32km pace.

Join me if you wish!

I would go with the old Sukhumvit Road jon suggests. I went down Bang Na Trat to Bang Pakong river and back on Sunday, and the motorbike lane and frontage road all along Bang Na Trat is littered with broken glass and other sharp detrius that is a puncture waiting to happen. I will stay well clear in the future and go with old Sukhumvit even though it adds quite a few kms on to the journey. (Kevlar tape saved the day for me)

I am a weekend cyclist who totters around on a hybrid, so I am not up to the average speeds of jon (I average around 23km/h). However, the Sunday run did have its merits. Just when I started to overheat I would get doused with a Songkran splash. The next soaking took place every time my clothes started to dry out. Didn't help much with chaffing in the nether regions though.

I've done that trip haf way to Pattaya, down to Bangsen Beach. Really one of the less enjoyable routes in Thailand from by perception. Too much riding along highway and old Sukhumvit is a dull, smelly ride. I would rather go down toward Hua Hin next time for the same distance.
