Thailand's Major Airports On Alert After Boston Bombings

BOSTON MARATHON TERROR
Airports on alert after US bombings

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Security at Thailand's major airports will be stepped up following the Boston Marathon bombings, according to a senior executive of Airports of Thailand.

Pongsak Semsant, caretaker president of AOT, said yesterday the latest violent incident in the United States prompted heightened security measures at the airports run by the company, including Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and the Don Mueang, Chiang Mai and Phuket facilities.

He said executives of those airports had been instructed to increase their security measures around the clock.

Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said yesterday he has ordered agencies to step up security at airports, bus terminals and railway stations.

No Thai nationals were affected by the Boston bombings, Foreign Ministry spokesman Manasvi Srisodapol said yesterday.

The Thai Consulate General in New York reported that no Thai nationals were killed or injured in the explosions in Boston, he said. The mission would also check with US authorities and the Thai expatriate community to confirm this, said Manasvi, who is director-general of the ministry's Department of Information.

The spokesman said the ministry offered condolences to those affected and expressed hope that US authorities would be able to arrest those responsible soon.

A Thai graduate student in Boston, Polly Saipinthong, said such a violent attack was rare in Boston, which she described as a "very beautiful city". She said she was among the people who were on hand to offer moral support to their favourite marathon runners, but left shortly after the elite competitors passed the finish line, before the blasts occurred.

In a related development, the Thai stock market was expected to see a decline when it reopens today following the long Songkran holiday. Many regional stock exchanges suffered a decline in prices yesterday following the Boston bombings.

An analyst said the violent incident in the US would be among negative factors driving down the Stock Exchange of Thailand Index. Other factors included China's lower-than-expected economic growth.

Don't you just love these statements which are blatantly nonsense and just an excuse for an official to hear his own voice. I particularly like " stepped up security at bus stations " as I have used my local bus station, quite a busy hub, for many years and there has never been any security guards.

Since no one has claimed responsibility for Boston and the US hasn't hinted at anyone or any group just who will Thai security be looking at ? It's all very well to reassure the public but how many Thais are interested in what happened in Boston ?

A better question would be how many Thais know where Boston is ..................

At a guess, about as many Bostonians who know where Thailand is.

More than Thais knowing Boston I'd wager . . . thumbsup.gif

More irresponsible journalism about nothing - way to go Nation. They must still be paying journalists by the word. And what measures have been taken and are now in force for additional security at the international airports in Bangkok? Please explain...

Most Thais don't acknowledge or care they have almost daily terrorist bombings in their own country,a bombing half a world away matters nothing to them-I remember September 13 2001 Bin Laden t-shirts selling like hotcakes in Bangkok...don't ask,it's just the way it is.

The south of Thailand is effectively a military controlled war zone and terrorism occurs on a daily basis. Far more people suffer and die on a daily basis and is a FAR more serious issue that what had happened in Boston. Why are the Thai authorities so quick to respond to an attack that happened on the other side of the world, yet the killing and bombing in their own country barely even makes the front page of the news?

Not to understate the seriousness of bombings because it is serious...

The Thais again over-state/over-think their importance in the world community. Why would Al-queda want to bomb Thailand? They are at war with the west particularly with America. Al-queda is attempting break the economy/spirit of Americans. If the airport was loaded with Americans everyday then possibly it could be a target, but the number of Americans coming to Thailand has reduced substantially.

At the time of the anthrax letters in the US there was tasteless and disgusting scene in a Thai comedy show on TV where an actress opened a letter to reveal white powder as she screamed " anthrax, anthrax ". I looked at my GF who said by way of explanation not excuse " it's not happening here so Thais don't care ", says it all really

The correct thing to do in these times, even if the responsible parties have not been identified. If they were not to heighten security and there was an incident they would be slammed. The Thai police and airport authorities are obviously doing something right, as there has not been a bomb attack in Thailand by an external party in years when many other countries have been hit.

Given the comments on here about the lack of security, police work, It would leave you to believe that Thailand ticks all the boxes for a terrorist attack. Lots of foreigners on holiday concentrated in small areas (Like Bali), lack of policing/airport security (TVF)

I say keep up the good work, and prevent any such instances happening here.

The issue in the south is a completely different issue, tragic and uncontrolled as it is.

Yes, it is a completely different issue because that is terrorism IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY, so no need to heighten security.

Two bombs go off 13.000kms away . . . HEIGHTENED SECURITY.

I see your logic

Ludicrous over-reaction. A bizarre and amateurish bombing in the USA provokes extra security measures worldwide. The bombers must be overjoyed at the ridiculous official paranoia they have created.

A better question would be how many Thais know where Boston is ..................

His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej of Thailand was born in the Boston area, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Ok, that's one.

(Ora re you saying that Thais know where Boston is because King Bhumipol was born there? They know the date, not the place)

There has been no claim of responsibility by anyone, no threats against the US or US interests anywhere in the world let alone against Thailand yet the government here swings into action to set up a " war room ", increase security, check foreigners with criminal records who entered the country 6 months ago and so on ad nauseum. Even if anyone believes this it's totally unnecessary, a simple statement of " monitoring the situation and will respond to any developments likely to affect the Kingdom " would suffice.but no, it's a great opportunity for officials to hold press conferences and sound important. Crap, complete crap !

More than Thais knowing Boston I'd wager . . .

I wouldn't bet on it personally.

What a joke. They should have been alert for the last 20 years for bombings and other attacks in the South. There are no parallels whatsoever between Thailand and the US. Do not be surprised that a single sick mind is responsible for the carnage just lick McVeigh.

But you wonder why all the fuss about a bombing in the US. They happen in France or Spain now and than too. When far more people get killed and maimed by huge bombings in the South you do not hear CNN, which is by the way the lapdog of the Thai military.

Careful you could get arrested for that ... I read a story a while back where some poor bugger actually got arrested and charged for releasing a noxious foul smelling gas on the NY subway ..yep you guessed it he Farted !

Just how good is the security in usa?

in a known area for terrorism ( afgan and iraq ) where they have armed military on guard ( american and nationals ) there are daily incidents.
