tragickingdom
The Thai police (establishment) is as bad as that of India. He will get no more than a slap on the wrist, after all she was Lao and worth less. But one wonders why none of his colleagues did anything. Or are there just three monkeys working at Thonglor station. The deaf one, the mute one and the blind one. And the detainees have all been transferred of course. Just sack the chief. Dr Wanchai
Must not be enough tea money in Thonglor to be a taxi driver after dark. Your obsession with tea money can be cured with Prozac.

sydneyjed
Will this even make it to court?..The whole country at both the highest level and downwards is entrenched in corruptution meaning that this has now become the 'norm' in both everyday life and in Thai society. What hope has anyone got of breaking down these corruptable barriers and seeing justice done fairly and squarely? We all could write a book(or two) based on the things we have experienced and read on both here and the many other places where nothing has ever been heard again regarding murders bashings and suspicious deaths...or suspects are suddenly allowed out on bail for blatantly shooting someone!Anyone who thinks something positive will come of this is delusional to be honest..sad but true!

rollrunna
When you have a society that accepts bribery to secure positions of power as normal and necessary , then you will only have moneyed people controlling the country, without any intention or necessary ability for being Any More than criminals. Corruption starts at the Top and is promoted by low wages and poor education.... Just google the richest mon arch... and mushroom society...

bkkgriz
Disgusting behavior from a person who vowed to uphold the law. What a joke Thailand has for a police force. We all might be better off if there were no police. Let's just let anarchy reign. The results may be similar to what we have now.

Why does everyone have a comment about this being a "third world" country when the sale of new cars here last year was higher than most western countries, Look around you iphones, ipads, laptops, tablet computers coming into schools, new motorbikes in nearly every house, new shopping malls being built in every city, McDonalds, KFC, Swensens and the rest of the ever growing chains, the country has changed 10 fold over the last 5 years, but then again it must be difficult to see all this with your blinkers securey fitted.

Hm, I guess you are missing a few vital points. Having the majority of your citizens stare at the displays of their iphones and ipads while they walk, drive or ride through the streets of your capital doesn't make your country a "first world" state. Nor do it record sales of automobiles - which are then crashed in record numbers of accidents - nor American junk food restaurants at every corner and an increasing number of obese youngsters. Being "third world" is (in my humble opinion) defined by: 1. open display of disregard for even the most simple laws and regulations 2. having 2/3 of the population considering corruption a positive asset "when it allows you to participate" 3. a police force which is unwilling to enforce the law and is more interested in collecting "tea money" 4. a justice system that allows the "upper class" to break the law without having to face any consequences while coming down like a load of bricks on the poor sods. 5. a situation where every local cab driver can take you to the nearest illegal casino while the local police force is unable or unwilling to close it down 6. losing 30 to 50% of every taxpayer's baht spent on government projects to corrupt officials and politicians So what has changed in Thailand over the last 5 years that makes it "first world"? edit: added one item Edited April 25, 2013 by MikeOboe57

Third world is a cold war term to describe countries neither allied, or enemies of NATO. NATO allies being first world, Communist Bloc allies being second world. Switzerland and Austria are officially third world countries. Your views on third world would place America, Australia and most of Europe in a third world bracket also, as many of the points on your list are daily occurances in these countries also. You shouldn't have stopped reading wikipedia after the third paragraph. Alfred Sauvy's definition is obsolete. Since the late 1960s the term "Third World" had received a totally new meaning. You can try to tell an Austrian or Swiss that they live in a "third world" country and learn it the hard way or just finish reading the Wiki article. And my views don't "place America, Australia and most of Europe in a third world bracket" as I clearly state that your quote about cars, iphones etc does not, as you claim, per se put a country in the "first world" league. Or are you disputing that there is definitely far more to it than shiny motorbikes, fast food and fat children?

Hence the scorn heaped upon them by anybody who has been here a long time and reads these stories on an ongoing basis. Of course this story pales next to the one with the drunk Thai policeman who chopped off the arm of a karaoke girl who refused his advances.....If you just showed up here last month, then you probably still believe the guys in brown uniforms running around are stopping crime instead of committing it.... :-) Edited April 25, 2013 by EyesWideOpen
