Slick Safecracker Steals German’s Cash Stash



Criminals stole 80,000 baht cash from the safe of a German building destruction contractor. Police suspect that the thief was either an insider or a safe opening expert, because the theft was committed without any signs of forced entry.

PATTAYA – April 25, 2013 [PDN]: At 1 a.m., a report of a burglary was received by Pol. Col. Anukul Preedayuth, detective officer of Pattaya police station. The burglary occurred in Gamania Condominium, soi Chaiyapruk 2, moo 12, Nongprue Banglamung, Chonburi.

Waiting for the police were the victims, Mrs. Sudaporn Pfeiffer, 43 years old, with Mr. Heinze Grodse , 46 years old, the owner of a building destruction business, from Germany.

They brought the police to see the crime scene on the 3rd floor, room number 306. They had checked in the clothes cabinet and found that their small safe, which had contained 80,000 baht cash, was missing the money. Only the passport of the husband was left behind.

As she is pointing at the safe itself, I'm going to conclude that the safe did it. This photo is clearly from the usual re-enactment done at the crime scene, with the safe showing how it opened and allowed the money to escape.

The official police report will show this as a suicide though............

One scenario was to put a light coat of oil on the keypad numbers then come back and dust it with baby powder will show what keys were pressed.

These safes always have a master code, just because tourists either forget the code they just entered, or because they leave the safe locked when they leave the hotel.

On top of that, like Payboy said, they often have a very simple additional code like 0000 (I've also seen 1234 and 9999 and some six-digit equivalents).

I never use these safes for these reasons. Either take my valuables with me (chance of getting mugged usually being lower than chance of hotel room burglary in absence), or leave them in a locked suitcase. At the same time, I do lock the safe, to make it look like my valuables are in there and not in the suitcase, for when someone who does not have the safe code, but has an intent, enters the room.

Thats one of the cheap Chinese safes that have a spring loaded device for a lock. All you have to do is keep some tension on that opening knob while hitting it on top with your closed fist or a rubber hammer is better and it will open. Takes a bit of practice but very easy. I had almost the same safe, forgot the combo so looked on Youtube and found out how to open it. Cheap safes are expensive. I had a Thai safe that was locked for years, a Leeco, and when I bought a good imported safe(B100,000 for the safe)I asked the locksmith to open that Leedco. He used a claw hammer and a nail and had it open in 10 mins, replaced the lock, reset combination, and was finished in maybe 1.5 hrs total including repairing the hole from the nail he unlocked it with. If you need a place for your passport and a couple of thousand baht a cheap safe is ok but keeping real cash or valuables you better get a real safe like a Chubb, Rosengren, Kaso, or something like that. Better check and make sure it is at least a Eurograde 1 or Eurograde 2(or UL 15 or UL 30 if from the USA) I assume that this gent was living in this condo at least on a semi permanent basis. If that safe went with the room and he was staying short time well its ok for your passport and 2K baht but thats about it.

There is no master code to get into that type of safe. The middle plate comes off and it opens with a key. I bought the same kind a few years ago for 750 baht when Big C Xtra was Carrefour.

A 1400 baht special where by if you flick open the little central panel there is a manual key opening lock, turn the key one way safe knob the other way and the safe opens, all keys are the same so any safe can be opened with one key with this brand of safe. 80,000 baht in crap safe like this not a good idea unless one has insurance of course.

good job the lady was on hand to point and show is what a safe is.

This type of safe has a battery operated key pad, if the battery fails there are keys supplied to open it. The key hole is behind a plastic cover. Seems someone found the keys, wonder who.

Only 24 combinations with a 4 digit pin. 4X3X2X1=24. Once you have the 4 numbers, just try them in sequence.

Seen many YouTube videos on opening these types of safes. Hit them in the correct place, somewhere on top, and they open. As others have commented - a cheap useless safe.

Officer Somsak probably won't know this though.

Take it from an expert, those safes need no master code, there are videos on Utube of them being opened with a potato.

Though I have worked with hotel safes with 4 levels of master codes they are somewhat more sophisticated than those C.E. (China Export) safes.

Thats not a safe, its a security box. No the keys are not all the same, we have 20 of them & no key interchanges.

We have adapted them so now they have a padlock but still would never recommend using for anything more than a few thousand Baht or pasports.
