Govt sets eyes on tourism as extra revenue earner

BANGKOK, May 21 – Thailand's Q1 gross domestic product (GDP) at 5.3 per cent compels the government to speed up economic stimulation to achieve a 5 per cent growth for this year, according to Deputy Prime Minister/Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong.

DDPM: heavy rains and winds expected to hit South

PHANG-NGA, 21 May 2013 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is issuing a stern warning to residents in the South to brace for more heavy rains and possible landslides.


The Department reported that a strong southwestern monsoon is prevailing over parts of the Andaman Sea, bringing widespread heavy rains and generating up to 3-meter waves during May 21-24.

Phang-Nga DDPM chief Somkiat Intharakham urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to closely monitor the situation and prepare for worst-case scenarios. Southern locals needing additional assistance are advised to contact the office at 076-460607-460599.

Phang-Nga and other southern provinces have seen a dramatic increase in rainfall and high waves. Fishermen have complained that due to strong winds, their boats have been kept ashore for over a week.

PM to visit Japan May 22-25

BANGKOK, 21 May 2013 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is due to visit Japan from May 21-25 to attend an international conference and to discuss bilateral relations with her Japanese counterpart.


Ms Yingluck will deliver a keynote address to Japanese business leaders on the development of Dawei Special Economic Zone on Wednesday before meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito the next day.

She is expected to discuss with Prime Minister Abe ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship and to raise investor confidence in using Thailand as a production base.

The premier will attend the 19th Future of Asia conference, co-hosted by Nekkei and Japan's Center for Economic Research, on the topic "Investing in the Future of Asia" on May 24. She is scheduled to visit Japan’s elderly care projects on Saturday before returning to Thailand.

Pornthip removed as chief of Central Institute of Forensic Science

BANGKOK: -- Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunan was Tuesday removed as the director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science and was transferred to the post of an inspectorgeneral for the Justice Ministry.

Her transfer was approved by the Cabinet during its weekly meeting yesterday. The Cabinet also approved her appointment as an advisor to the committee in charge of implementing policies to tackle southern insurgency.
