I just bought some apples with NZ apple stickers on in a local market in Chonburi in Thailand. The stickers all look genuine. They say the variety is Royal Gala. The apples look like Royal Gala. The number on the sticker is 4173. They were selling for 5 Baht each. They were a little small and not as sweet as I expected but certainly edible.

What's the chance they are genuine and what's the chance they are Chinese apples with counterfeit stickers?

I have e-mailed the NZ apple exporting body. I wonder what I will discover.

Some apple varieties have more that one name. PINK LADY is a very tart and crisp apple that meets the highest of standards. The rest of them are sold as CRIPPS PINK. I've not heard of fake Chinese stickers, but it's possible. It used to be pretty easy to tell Chinese from other apples, as their stickers would NOT pull off. You had to cut them off.

Actually PC, the stickers were tricky to remove. I bet they were Chinese and covered in carcinogenic chemicals.
