I know many expat ladies who fly to Hong Kong for their hair

They offer good haircuts over there, including frontal lobotomy.

Yes ! Lobotomy is definitely needed with haircuts here, to avoid the post hair cut depression ! That or just cut the whole head off laugh.png

Most fun haircut is in the Underground station at cnr Sukhumvit and Asoke Rd.

Take the escalator down to the first underground point, the bit where you can transverse under Asoke Rd (not all the way down to the ticket office).

There is a small walkway/arcade to the left.

Just near the entrance they have a series of booths which offer a haircut for 100Baht.

The fun bit is after the haircut you get vacuumed ... w00t.gif ... lasted maybe a month ... definately an experience.

Getting vacuum'd for a month doesn't sound fun :)

500 baht? You must be getting a hair cut in some up market mall?

I get the 80 baht hair cuts with a shave and a nice shoulder and head massage, then give them 200 baht feeling pretty happy about it.

Just try a little road side place.

Why woulkd you want to give some one 200 baht for some thing that only costs 80baht?

Where i live (outskirts of bkk) its normally 70 baht including optional shave. I normally throw in an extra 20 if they do a decent job which isnt hard with my bald head biggrin.png

I have given up on hair dressers here.

Even the top of the range : ie Vidal Sassoons or Cut & Curl where you can easily part with $150 - $ 200 for highlights + cut, hair dresses have no decent training.

Ask them why they still use foil for coloring whereas the western world has switched to plastic wrappers for about 10 years now, since it damages the hair, you won't get any answer.

Ask them for a flash (final touch to blend highlights and roots) they have no clue of what it is and they start getting grumpy.

Here highlights means ONE color and one color only. Ask your colorist for a blend of 2 different colors to give depth to the color and all he can say is that you pay double with a vacant stare as he has no clue and never done it. No advice as to how it could complement you skin color, your actual hair color, how the colors could work together or how its will fit your cut. you have the choice between cheap looking blond, fake looking blond and puke blond.

Ask for more colors and you might get shown the door as the hair colorist is losing face as you are pointing his ignorance.

In Cut & Curls the girl actually did my cut based on my previous haircut, she just cut the same length everywhere without checking the balance ! i happened to be quite impulsive with my hair and sometime chuck a lock or two, little did I knew my future hair cut will be based on it !

She did highlights parallel to my actual skull instead of the angle technique used in the West and her dividing technique was just random.

I had to remind her of the importance of checking the face outline, in cut and coloring as she did not bother to do look at it.

They ALL wash the hair before coloring!

In Bangkok I even had a hairdresser buying a rubber cap with wholes to do highlights like it was done in the 80's!

The list goes on and on ...

I know many expat ladies who fly to Hong Kong for their hair, I cannot afford it, so like many here, we learn to do it ourselves !

I don't suppose they will have much training or experience of anything other than black hair, could be a business idea in that?.

The remarks I made are not black hair specific

They need some training on black hair too. took my Thai stepdaughter to an up market joint in Siam Square, she wanted highlights. 30 mins later she is phoning me to tell me that the guy says he doesn't need to any bleaching first as they have "new" products that can put the colour into black hair without bleaching. When I went to collect her I asked where the highlights were, he pointed, I looked, no highlights. Owner then tried to convince me they were very faint as "that more fashion" so faint they were invisible. My wife then arrived and told her in no uncertain fashion that as the highlights were invisible so would the payment be. Left without paying and put it down to experience.

I must admit i am not a trained hair dresser and my bonce is cut by a young 22 year old lad who cuts it how a barber would back home. However I would have thought that highlights and colouring would be black hair specific, as I said not much experience on anything other than black hair.

Being a man who only wakes showers and shaves, have no idea please enlighten me.

never paid more then 200 bht, another place 100 bht. Quality cut to.

Something I know a lot about is hair, I worked in a saloon as a young man.

should not be paying 500bht.

Same here it usually is 200 or even 150

I pay between 100-200 in Pattaya, the further away from the tourist places you get the cheaper.

I agree it's hard to find a really good one, I prefer a Lady hair cutter they seems to be more interested in the final result.

One time I had a hair cut at a side soi to central Pattaya road and the older male hair cutting dude just started to cut away

and my wife got angry when I got home, who did that she saidbiggrin.png, it looks like a drunk person cut your hair, very uneven.

Well at least it was only 80 bath if memory serves me right but I had to go next day again (with my wife this time).biggrin.png

Sometimes it's not easy to be a man, eh.

In my own case, I've noticed that the longer the hair style, the longer before a haircut is required. With my current hairstyle I will start looking untidy after 3-4 weeks. So I get a haircut every 4 weeks. If I wait 6 weeks it'll look awful. There's not a hairdresser in the world who can change that fact.

How can someone possibly think that the hairdresser is responsible for the growth of your hair...? ufb

I go about every 4-6 weeks. A great haircut, and good shave for 100 baht and that includes a good tip. The guy cuts lots of very trendy hair cuts for Thai teenagers and and really good. I've never paid more the 100 baht including tip.

20 years ago in ShangHai, you could get a good haircut on the sidewalk for about 50Baht. The barber just set up a wooden stool and you could sit and watch all the people pass by.

Maybe someone who is low on funds could try the same thing in Chiang Mai.

I get my hair cut from the hairshop in the village about every six weeks and it only costs me 50 Baht. I have long hair which covers my ears.

I wet shave every three days. Super refreshing, plus I love the ritual of lathering up the soap dish and applying it, a good shaving soap will only cost 300 baht and will last a year.

in the village/suburb my wife hails from, the two barbers have colluded on price yet again, its now 50 baht for a haircut, shave and a good head and neck massage.

when i return for a holiday, i have already bought for my preferred barber a new shaving brush, i really like the fellow and his new wife, nice people.

once i was halfway through a haircut near wat po in bkk, when in walked 5 monks for a haircut, rapidly i was relegated to the waiting seats, whilst all the monks were dealt with first.

I would not put up with that. I would tell them to wait their turn.

A good haircut should last SIX weeks.

...and the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is TWO weeks.

If it helps you can get a pemanent straight hairdo which will last for about six months. If you want more details PM me.

For a Male, it's pretty simple... stick with the older "Street" barbers for your clipper cut 'like' cuts and enjoy the shave and massage that goes with your 120 THB service.

For a Female, go a little upmarket, look for the Stylist that has the best 'hair style look' in the salon, and then book with the stylist who does her hair!

I've owned 18 salons and it works for me :-)

It's taken me quite a while and a few disastrous haircuts to finally discover a ladyboy hairdresser that knows how to cut hair properly. She/he is quick, precise, knows how to use a razor. Haircuts last a month to six weeks. Only after I discovered this one did my wife tell me that all the best hairdressers are ladyboys in her humble opinion.

Unless you're going for the "metro" look, sick.gif

i dont see why you'd pay more than 200THB for a hair cut for guy.

I've paid $150 for a hair cut in the US

I've paid $5 for a hair cut in the US

best cut was from a latina in costa mesa for $7

I left her $20 tip.

Her great cut (and her D cupswhistling.gif ) kept me coming back.

Here in TL, find a Thai barber you like for 200THB

and go get a cleanup after 3 weeks.

at 200THB, you dont mind going in for cleanup.thumbsup.gif

Just buy a cheap buzzcutter and do it yourself. Saves loads.

Did exactly that 8 yrs ago. Still on the same blades. My wife does it every 3/4 weeks free!

In Nam Phong it is 40 Baht. Explain what you want, otherwise you will be shaved 2 inches above the ears.

My only complaint is that there is often an hour wait and then at least 45 minutes in the chair.

Excellent job though, I am more than happy. Well overdue for my next haircut though. Now that the school holidays are over, I may be able to find the time to go and get my locks lopped.

On the dark side of Pattaya I had a place nearby that did me for 150 Baht which was fine as others in the area always wanted 300 Baht for farang hair cutting tax. Upcountry in the town it's about 100 Baht for a OK cut.

Out in the village I've had a flat top student haircut for 20 Baht from a very elderly guy with a Wahl trimmer from the 1840s, I had to move the chair through the cow siht to get within reach of the only electric power outlet for the cotton covered cable the trimmer had.

Out of politeness I allowed that style to remain one day before using my beard trimmer to buzz cut the lot off, a huge improvement in looks, washing and feeling cooler.

Just make sure you only get your hair cut on the relevant auspicious hair cutting days !

2 solutions here:

(1)Get hair cuts up country, less than 100 Baht in the smaller town

(2)Always tell tell the barge # 3 and cut everything.

That will leave you with hair about 1/4" all over your head. That should last a couple of months plus hard to mess this hair style up

I guess after going under the knife the ladyboy learned to use the razorcheesy.gif
