Buying A Cheap Car (100K) / Small Pickup Or Station Wagon

Featured Replies

I want to buy a cheap car, this can be a small pickup truck with a back bench or a station wagon (at least 4 seats).

Important things for me is that the vehicle is technically sound (and that the aircon is good, LOL), and cheap to maintain and repair, so I guess I should stick to Japanese brands, correct?

I saw some Nissan NV for sale, they look ok for what I need (both as pickup and van versions) - are there any other brands and models that are of good construction and which could still be in ok shape after 15 to 20 years and worth approx. 100k baht?

what are the 2 or 3 best and largest used cars dealers in Pattaya?

For that money expect to spend the same amount once or twice over to get it to western standard.

Rear wheel drive pick ups are much simpler to fix and give you a wide range of options for an engine swap if needed at some point or second hand parts, axles etc.

And what about amount of Km you want to drive with it? 100 or is 200km enough? :)

Many Ferangs foreget the MOT, they fiddle it for Poor Thais, and Shred it for Ferangs. No Tax, No Insurance and big bills to get it passed.thumbsup.gif

Anything in this price range is there for a reason.. So you'd def. want a well stocked toolbox and ready access to parts.

Yes a pick up in this price range??? I'd hate to see that on the road let alone be there with it..Thai's are well known for getting the last drop of life out of their trucks and I'd say that price range is the last drop..

From riding the streets of Pattaya I'd say many of the pick-ups with useby dates are still being used and usually being followed by clouds of smoke!

one2car website is more expensive then most others but you can put in a price..........

http://www.one2car.com/search/search_result.aspx?price1=1&price2=100000

there is 327 cars and pickups listed for under 100,000 baht... some look not so bad and you will find them cheaper at other places but it is a place to start. get an idea what you like and then search other sites

Nissan NV lots here http://www.taladrod.com/w20/Search/TbSch3F_Inf.aspx#mk:34+md:261

Pay no attention to the naysayers. Motive for selling is a great price reducer. If I lost my WP and had to (or chose to) leave the country in a hurry, I'd sell my "older vehicle" for whatever I could get for it, rather than hold out for what it's worth in the market.

I'd still be dollars ahead if I gave it away rather than spend another week in Thailand hoping I could get a better price. Better to show up at my next job a week earlier and make some new, fresh money than to hold out hoping to recoup a little more old money.

Only problem is that many of them are from tents advertising the downpayment, not full price - and several with completely wrong prices - e.g. Benz's for 1 Baht, 2008 Yaris for 470 Baht etc ;)

yes, on taladrod many advertised prices are just the downpayment and no way to select that away.

one2car is much better

The NV is good buy. Otherwise pick up the price to 150k plus. Then Ford Ranger. Mazda Fighter etc.

For a car in that price range, I think dealfish may be your best place to start. If you don't read Thai, just view it in google chrome and download the automatic google translate.

Cheap car and Thailand do not rhyme.

If you honestly can only afford a 100K car you would be better off buying a bike.

this would be a constant hassle with the police, because of 4-5 people on the bike, plus the boxes of beer.

Nissan Sunny appear quite often in the 100-150k range for years 1996-2000.

Are Nissan Sunnys bad?

Nissan Sentra is better.

ummm... and any good options for maintainance and repair of VW in Pattaya?

When your buget is around this level the Turds no longer polish-up............as someone said better to buy a bike..

Actually, I've spotted a very nice Volkswagen for about 150k.

I would want to buy it if I knew I can get it maintained and repaired easily around Pattaya?

Anyone knows about VW mechanics?

maintenance is just that, same as any car of any make, really the only difference is parts and the price of them, there is no market for copy part so for a VW it has to be full price genuine parts....

As for repaired easily, there again the only problem can be parts, and the cost......... unlikely to find in a breakers so would have to be new, maybe have to wait for said part to come from say Germany.. but often a good mechanic can modify...........

The only problem I had on my Audi A6 was steering pump, and Auto climate controller for air con, switch for electric windows x2. all item were fixed cheap with parts 2nd hand from a different brand/make of car. I bought the car 10 years old, that was 6 years ago.

No idea why so many people have the idea that a 2nd hand car will constantly break down...

In my Village there are 2 old cars, much older than mine, looks like it should be in a showroom the old couple bought new, and are always cleaning it, it gleams 1975 Toyota Corona RT104......... the other a old 1988 123 Benz 300D, he drives it to Bangkok and back every day, that is over 100 km per day, and has done so for past 10 years, you hear it coming up the Village, but then that is what old diesels sounded like back then., funny really 5 years ago he thought it was on its last legs, he bought a new Fortuner so far has less then 10,000 km on the clock !!, he hates it but says one day the old Benz will die..

The house next to mine he bought a 1998 Toyota Soluna privately 2 years ago for 100,000 baht, never had an problems, opposite have a 1990 Corolla, he is a bit mad driver and used every day for work never a problem in 10 years + VERY high km

On the + side the VW would have ABS and Airbags ? not many Thai cars have safety features on this price range

About the Nissan Sunny, I have to say I mean the "Nissan B14", because "Sunny" has been given to many different models in many countries.

ok, will go to see the Volkswagen today and maybe do the deal.

What's the procedure/formalities?

I got work permit and passport with non B (and DL of course)

an old Toyota Crown ? lots for under 100k very big engine bay, if goes wrong can fit most types of engines.......... many already have a Toyota VVTi replacement engine, have seen fitted with a Nissan Diesel engine...

Year ago had one like this.post-42643-0-45146100-1370571431_thumb.j

Mine was in Gold

nah... need seating and/or cargo capacity smile.png

saw the Volkswagen today.

I was ready to pardon a lot of things for the price, but there were too many red flags:

- sporadic "clunks" when turning the weels strongly and driving

- there obviously had been a bump at the front, denied by the seller

- found a small oil stain below the car

- needs new oil every 10.000 Km (well, if it leaks....)

- water in one lamp case

- another bump had taken place at the rear, damaging the paint (spintering away)

- the shock absorbers were dead (could shake the car with one finger)

- seller said proudly that the car can run at 120 Kph! Wow. I owned some time ago an 18 year old Golf II that was still able to beat 180 Kph.

I would have forgotten most of the things, but the oil stain and the clunks when steering were too much.

And the owner advertised the car as being in "very good condition"

BTW, does anyone know what causes these "clunks"?

had that on my golf years ago too.

Are those cardan joints in need of lubricant because a cover has broken?
