Public Transport To Promenada Mall?

NancyL

Recommended Posts

There are 3 free shuttle buses (looks like rod dang) in front of the mall.

No.1 Promenada->Chiang Mai University->Nimmanaemin-> Promenada

No.2 Promenada->Airport Intersection->Chiang Mai Gate-> 3 Kings Monument->Kad Luang(Varorot Market)->Train Station->Promenada

No.3 Promenada->Payup University Food center> Kairos Square Payup University-> Promenada

Thank you

now this old cheapskate farang can get his FREE ride.

Now that wasn't a very nice thing to say. In my mind Dolly and the others weren't looking for a FREE ride. Because they have no cars or bikes they are just looking for some form of public transportation.

It's actually a welcome addition to public transport in Chiang Mai.. wink.png Good routes.

Do you know if it will be a permanent thing or just until everyone gets to know where it is?

If it's permanent, I'm sure the Promenada will get a lot of people who might otherwise not bother.

Free transport to a brand new mall, are the theaters the size of football stadiums?

Wonder how long before the Central free wifi and air con crowd move in?biggrin.png

Um, they're ary Euro films. Not CGI 3D hollywood flicks.

I'm going, but that's mostly in the hope of meeting some arty Euro chicks.

Somehow I think the competition will be stiff for their attention - we are in CM, after all. Everyone's an artist or a spiritualist...or both ;) Happy hunting!

This evening we found the Promenda shuttle service to be a sham. The opening film of the EU film festival was over at 9:15 and guess what -- the very same red song thae drivers who normally take rides for free wanted 200 baht per person. Also, the "free" shuttle between the parking lots ended at 9 pm, leaving a lot of people who drove also upset.

The song thaew drivers acted like they were in Pattaya or Phuket -- commanding high fares because they spoke some English and wre willing to work past 6 pm. They definitely didn't act like the usual CM song thaew driver -- This mall doesn't below here, but along some coastal city that attracts more tourists.

I would imagine most people have a motorbike or a car to get there.also they will be the red bus to get you there.public transport in chiang mai is something I do not use

Well good for you. How ever there are many people who do not have are own transportation and use public transportation.

In my original post I asked if there would be a free shuttle to the Promenada mall and if there would be songthows, tuck tucks and taxi's

there for transportation home. I pointed out that the songhowas and tuck tucks were available at the two exiting major malls and free transportation at the Airport Mall.

So far all I have gotten in the way of answers was half witted I don't knows. (actually some of them are low brow insults) but I just looked at the sources.

Now they come out and say they have the free shuttle with on three different routes with nefarious stops. Like Chiang Mai University. That is a big area.

They also say if you read the article it is for the film festival.

We get first hand experienced answer from a user of the supposedly free shuttle. and a response of I don't use public transport. Most people have there own transport. The songthows and tuck tucks on the road are not an illusion they are real for the use of many people.

I repeat my original question will there be free songhtows to the Mall such as at Airport Mall and will there be tuck tucks and songthows f

such as at the Airport Mall and KSK for transportation home and in the case of the Airport Mall taxi's.

I now realize it is probably to early for answers I just got carried away in all the original hype about the opening. A friend of mine was there and said the Rimping market was open only it was about the size of a 7/11

Already answered by NancyL in another thread. The free songthaews cost 200 THB per person. Would buses in your home city give rides to visiting Thai tourists for free? I think not.

You just never give up do you. Now you are trying to change the subject.

You are in Chiang Mai Thailand Asia.

We all ready have another mall that does that. Get off your high horse and answer the questions.

As the previous posts have said this is for the Euro festival no talk about being a permanent happening.

The truth as I now see it is probably to early to answer those questions. As if you would know any how.

I would imagine if they do come up with free rides they will not look like red songthaews.

I am hoping for tuck tucks, cabs and songthaews to be there not like Makro or the Tesco lotus on the road to Hong Dong just past the airport mall.

I don't think you read my answer closely -- they wanted 200 baht/person! Also, I think I addressed the fact that it wasn't the cost that bothered me, but the fact that it was promoted as free and I planned accordingly.

In many larger college towns in the U.S., there are free buses that run a loop around campus. They don't charge the foreign students and in the several towns where I've seen them in operation, they don't even ask if you're a student when you get on the bus. So, yes, even Thai tourists would be able to ride in buses that were advertised as being free for free.

It's new so everyone wants to say they've seen it.

When all the hoo ha dies down it will be the same as any other mall. There will be those who go by truck or car, those who go by motorcycle and those who are happy to negotiate with Tuk Tuks and Songtheaws. I think what is going to cause the angst is the prices they will charge, especially at night, maybe ruling it out for those without personal transport. Me I don't care, don't like malls very much anyway and I certainly wouldn't get stressed out not being able to get to one. I'll stick to Airport Plaza for a movie now and then, TOPS downstairs, Tesco, Big C for my western stuff, all within a 5 minute drive.

Did you have the right bus? The ones I saw had Promenada livery across the sides (kind of a wood pattern), and a big white band along the roof line. They had text stating 'free shuttle bus' or similar.

I can't help but think this is some misunderstanding, or you spotted a regular red bus, or it was after their service hours, or something else. You have to assume that if Promenada management gets dedicated buses with 'free shuttle' written on them and publishes a schedule, that this is indeed their intent.

They have a Facebook page, if these were indeed the right buses then I'd ask them what's up with those.

Same in Perth, W.A. (Western Australia). The city runs a continuous free bus service, one service is East-West and the other North-South.

Tourist or commuter, it's free, keeps the city uncluttered with traffic and gets you to most places of interest and back to where you parked the car.

Buses all run on LPG, with a push-button service linked to satellite, which tells you when the next bus is coming in, usually 2 or 3 minutes..

Yes, I'm certain I had the right bus, Winnie, especially when I got someone from the theater management who came out to talk with them. The free shuttle stops at 9 pm, many of the films from the EU film festival will be over after 9 pm. That's why the theater manager went and got a Promenada manager. By the time she'd shown up, the half dozen songthaews that had been there a few minutes ago were gone. There was no one for her to talk with, at which point she called a blue/yellow taxi that took us home for 200 baht total, in aircon comfort, not bouncing around in the back of a song thaew at 200 baht/person.

It's just poor planning and execution for them to stop the shuttle between the parking lots and the shuttle into town BEFORE many films are done in the cinema, especially when the EU films aren't shown in the afternoon, like they were when the festival was at KSK.

So yes, if someone plans to go to the EU film festival, they need to arrange their own transport, in advance, or fall prey to the songthaew mafia. If they drive, they need to leave a train of bread crumbs from their car in the remote parking to the theater, so they can hike to their car after the film is over.

Nancy,

How many other people did you see looking for transportation? (songthaews)

And how many people were in attendance of the free movies?

I'm curious.

The event was the invitation-only premiere reception. It was mostly local glitterati who came to get photographed at the reception and then leave. The film itself was poorly attended (it was a very enjoyable film). I did see some people, including Thais, who were very upset to discover the free shuttle to the remote parking stopped at 9 pm and the people directing traffic in the parking area didn't speak Thai. The few song thaews that remained apparently were charging to shuttle people to their cars. Some paid, others went to talk to the theater management who came down and showed them the way to their remote lot, where they set off on foot. (poor lighting, not a safe option.

I also saw people looking annoyed and making phone calls. All appeared to be Thai, so we didn't engage them in conversation. Presumably they found rides because by the time the dust settled, we were alone with the rep from mall management.

Nancy with all do respect for the position you are coming from. I would like to point out that this was all set up for before the Mall opens and the schedules I had seen for the free shuttles were stated to be for this one event. I saw no sign as to them being permanent. I do believe when the Mall is really open there will be shuttles with specific stops like the air port ones. The schedule they gave for the film festival was very inadequate. for instance Chiang Mai university is like saying the old city. When they do really open I am sure these bugs will be ironed out. I for one want to see the finished product. I have no fear of people in the malls and my understanding from the original web site about two years ago was that there would also be a park like area where other activities will take place.

If you have been following it from the start you will recall that just recently they had said they were setting up a new type mall in order to attract visitors from other area's as they did not feel Chiang Mai could support just another Mall.

I had specifically emailed the EU organizers asking if the transport would be available after the film. They said yes.

I guess I asked the wrong question -- i.e. how long is the film and when does it start? Then I could have done the math to realize there was a disconnect between the published schedule and the EU's schedule. I had assumed the EU organizers had already done the math when they told me there would be shuttle service back to the city.

I'm glad you added the edit Winnie, because otherwise I'd be much more upset about your being yet another person (along with L&J and Electrified) who just doesn't understand the nature of my complaint -- it's not about expecting something for free, it's about a business executing what they promise.

Yes, we have lots of blessings here. In the big scheme of things this is a minor inconvenience. I just hope they move the EU film festival to the new Maya mall next year. (and I hope they have pedisterian access, so their customers won't become road kill on the Superhighway.)

Nancy best to let it lay where it is. We are in Thailand and just because a person is a foreigner it still might be complicated for them to understand a big company not doing what they say they will do. It might reflect on the way they run there life. So they just run any one down who expects it.

My guess is In September it will all be sorted out to the way it is going to be maybe not your way or my way but it will be a known way so we can plan accordingly. I for one am anxious to see the finished product.

I am hoping they will have the same transportation services as the Airport Mall rather than the ones at Makro on the highway. Ever try to get a ride on the Super Highway? Not really exciting.smile.png

I to was glad Winnie added that edit. He is so dead rite when he says count are blessings. Some of us have lived here so long that we forget we knowingly moved here we pretty much knew what to expect we had visited here before. Nothing gets me more upset than to hear long tome expats complaining about the conditions here. If they don't like them move out into the country side.

Actually we tried the Promenada food court yesterday and full marks for selection, quality and price. (Food court set up seems to be a copy of the more upmarket food court on the 6th? 7th? level of Central Chitlom in Bkk.)

Yes, I was very impressed too. Not quite as big as the one as Airport Plaza, which also remains quite good, as far as food centers go.
