I am registering my childs birth and 1st passport. Is it ok to hand in my wifes settlement visa at the same time or is a better to wait for the birth to be registered?

There's no reason why you shouldn't hand them both in on the same day. Whilst your missus deals with the visa application, you can go upstairs and sort out the birth registration. I'm not sure of timescales for the issue of your child's passport but I think it's about 1 week.

The consular birth certificate/UK passport applications are processed in the consular section, whereas visas are processed in the visa section. Moreover, after 21 April, visa applications will be outsourced. There may be problems with concurrent applications if the different sections require the same original documentation.
