1. Can I get a 60 tourist visa if I cross into Savannaket?

2. Do trains run from Laksi to Mukdahan?

thanx in advance

I very much doubt it as I don't think you can get a tourist visa in Luang Prabang even, only Vientiane as far as I know!

Not in Luang Prabang, which is why the OP is asking about the Thai Consulate in SAVANNAKHET, where visas are available.

And, no train to Mukdahan, could get off in Khon Kaen and take the bus, but that might be at a weird hour of the morning and no buses running.

Could fly to either Ubon or NKP and bus from there.

Or, bus right to Muk.

Note, the SavanVegas hotel and casino in Savannakhet does have a "visa run" package. I've never done it but you could Google for more info. Some folks on ThaiVisa have done this.

I have been a number of times to the Royal Thai Consulate in SAVANNAKHET

Boarder is fine and not busy, same with the Consulate...... I have been 2 x on a Visa Package, 1x with the Casino. the rest is on my own by Bus, VIP bus is very good + you stop 1/2 way and is a free meal provided.

Casino pick you up at the Bus station and do everything for you over the boarder's.....Do Visa for you and collect for you next day... Nice rooms...... 3 meals a day. but you are long way from anything...

By yourself .get a bus ticket to Savannakhet 45 baht, they will wait for you if not busy while you get your Laos Visa,,,,,, But is best to tell the bus you do not need. from Bus Station to Consulate a Tuk Tuk cost 60 baht..... Boarder to Consulate a Tuk Tuk cost 60 baht.....

Savannahket is not large and you can easy walk everywhere........... Google and print off a Map..... DO TAKE all photos and photo copies with you, you will need to get a photo copy of the Laos Visa, shop on road across from gates to Consulate ....... 10 Thai baht a copy !!!! If NOT using Casino take a lot of 20 and 50 baht notes, if you have a big note they the shops will give you Kip change..

It is a easy place to go for a Visa, have over the years been 2x to Vientiane, hate it and the crowd of people and the waiting in line..

Nok Air also do flights..... look on there website Fly + Bus all in package

That's odd I was under the impression it could be done in style.

It's a non-starter,I just saw the ubiquitous minibus on the website, that comes complete with Yabba-Dabba-Somchai at the wheel in running spikes, ready to leave you for dead when he eventually crashes after 137 hours solid driving with no sleep!sick.gif

Just because a lot of vans have accidents doesn't mean you should never take one.

Weight the costs and convenience, take the danger factor into account.

A small operator making a living from just a few vans and 100% foreign customers is likely to take pretty diligent care of the danger factors.

If you think the driver's being dangerous for whatever reason you can always have him pull over and get out.

Try doing that from an airplane or train - well you can't even smell the driver's breath then can you?

On my way back form the Andaman Club,I rented a Toyota Fortuner from Phuket Airport and drove to Ranong. My card was cloned and bank account emptied to the tune of USD $1,500 by a "Green" company that have "National" outlets but that's another story!I saw a minibus that looked like it had been righted back onto it's wheels as all the side was dented, all the windows smashed out and you could see trails of fresh blood from the window frames.

It was around the Phang Nga/Khao Lak area and upon my return to Phuket I looked it up online and discovered that 4 people had lost their lives in that accident, with a van coming the other way loaded with small fish.Apparently the driver overtook on a blind bend that goes into a narrow bridge area and hit the pickup, needless to say he took off running and left the 4 people, literally for dead!

I now tell anyone I can to NEVER use those minibuses and I certainly never will again.

And if you ever witness an airplane crash will you then tell everyone never to fly?

Live long enough and you'll only be walking - whoops that's not too safe either is it?

Falling in the bathroom's a major cause of death, how's your B.O.?

If you can't see the difference between a qualified commercial airline pilot and Somchai the unlicensed minibus driver then maybe it's better you do walk everywhere! What an utterly moronic statement!rolleyes.gif
