Phuket nightspot Jammin burns down

(2006-04-01 15:41:46)

Famed local nightspot Jammin Music Club burned to the ground Saturday morning. Current estimates of damage range from 2 to 3 million baht Jammin owner Mel Purdue told Phuket Post. He explained, "I was at home when I got a phone call from the club manager at about 6 am. By the time I arrived at the club the fire truck had already put out the fire. The damage is extensive and I think it will take at least a month for the place to be renovated but we will still keep all the staff employed though."

Klay Songdacha, Club Manager and a group of friends were drinking together on the second floor of another building two blocks away at the time of the fire and told the Post what he saw, "We smelt something burning and when we went outside we saw smoke coming out of the building. We tried to use fire extinguishers to put out the fire but when we opened the door billows of smoke kept us from proceeding. The fire trucks took only 20 minutes to put out the fire but by then a huge amount of damage had been done. We think the fire may have been caused by an electrical problem as it was already daylight and many people were in the area so arson does not seem likely."

Pol Lt Col Sa-nguan Muangtam told Phuket Post that it is too early to conclude what caused the fire as his officers are still investigating.

As you approach Phuket town from the south on Chao Fah Nok Road, you come to a huge intersection where you can either go straight on to Rang Hill or turn right to town central (fruit market on right too). Jammin is/was on the left hand side of that turn into town.

Where is jammin ?

Okay thanks, so, if you continue on that road, not the one into town, it will take you up to Rang Hill? Is there a restaurant on Rang Hill?

What exactly burned down?

from TFA that PP wrote it seems that there was a fire and the place will re-open in a month or so.

Typical sensationalist headline

Take a look at the pics on either the Post or the Gazette. The place was gutted. The structure may or may not be okay (This is Thailand so god only knows how that qualifies) but the inside was truely f^*%&. My mate went down and took photos and the only thing that did not burn was the drumkit, bizarrely. As far as burning down goes the fire did a pretty good job. Hope the insurance pays out as the place had just been redone and was just starting to get busy again. Nice barmaids too........

Somebody told me that Jammin will re-open before the end of the month, so it can't have been that badly damaged if it has been repaired so quickly with time lost for Songkran to boot.

Drove past it few days ago and it still looks pretty gutted, that said in does not take too long for things to get built/rebuilt here so it might well be open by the end of May.

As the owner of Jammin I would just like to set the record staight as to exactly what happened as a result of the fire and what was done to put it right.

The fire was started as a result of an electrical fault and therefore all of the wiring and lighting was damaged beyond repair. The only real strucural damage were the stairs, most of the rest of the damage to the building was superficial and caused as a result of smoke. The main sound sytem was also totaled.

When the police had finaly finshed their investigation we were able to start the clean up and rebuilding. This was the 15th April and the work was completed by the 26th, the 27th and 28th April were spent installing and testing the new sound system.

The builders were excellent and my staff were nothing short of brilliant. They did all they could to get the place up and running again and worked very hard and very long days, without them we would not have turned the place around so quickly.
