Summer rock camps for Phuket kids

PHUKET: -- The newly formed Phuket Academy of Performing Arts (PAPA) will be running two new summer music camps on the island during school vacation.

Designed to cater for musically inclined youth, the two camps will be split by age between students aged 5 to 8, and 9 to 17 – think of it as The School of Rock, without the sneaking around.

Both camps will run simultaneously at the new Arts and Culture Centre at the Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS).

Students will get to form bands, collaborate on designing and making posters and T-shirts, perform music together, make videos, play music-related games and in the process have a whole lot of fun.

During the week, well known Phuket artists Pjae Stanley and Colin Hill will pop in to guide the students through ‘stage moves’ and ‘stage presence’, and depart some other useful music tips.

A dance instructor will also visit the camp to teach choreography to the students for their music video and live show.

The Little Rockers Summer Camp, catering for the 5 to 8 year olds, will include singing, dancing, arts and crafts, dress-up, fun games and movies, group music activities and stage theatrics.

The Rock ‘n Roll Summer Camp for ages 9 to 17 will include the same types of activities as well as music instrument lessons and more focus on what goes on inside a rock band.

Both camps participants will get to take part in a ‘Band Photo Shoot’ as well as the filming of a camp music video and will take part in a final day show.

The summer holiday programme is the forerunner to the new extracurricular programme that will be offered at PIADS starting in August of this year.

The collaboration between PIADS and PAPA is a new concept that will make quality music and drama education and facilities available to students from across Phuket.

The camp runs from Monday, June 29, until Friday, August 2, from 10am to 5pm daily.

This sounds like a great opportunity for the kids of the island. Im sure it comes with a hefty pricetag being associated with PIA, but will be on the look out in 4 years when my little one is old enough to attend.
