Discussions on the post on the closing of the Olde Bell went into discussions on alternatives, which led to discussions on beer buffets. This was somewhat off-topic, but generated enough interest (in me if no one else) to warrant a separate topic.

The beer buffets I now know of:

The Monkey Club, 6 to 9 p.m. every day, all you can drink Chang for 99 baht, Federbrau for 129 baht, or Heineken for 139 baht. Only 15 to 20 somewhat subdued customers in a very big bar when I stopped by around 7 on Tuesday.

Rush bar, a new place on Nimmanhamin soi 9 about 50 meters east of Monkey Club. I only did a drive by, it had about about the same number of customers as Monkey Club but in a much smaller area. The courtyard was semi-full, the bar almost empty. I've been informed it's 99 baht for all you can drink Heineken from 6 to 9 p.m. It looked like a nice place to down a few.

A sushi place (not it's name, that's how I know it) on Nimmanhamin soi 6 between Wawee Coffee and PowerHouse Gym, just look for the crowd. All you can drink Chang, Heineken, or Asahi beer from 6 to 8 p.m. Sometimes one of the brands will be warm and flat, you can switch to another if that happens. The sushi isn't great but it's ok. This buffet is quite popular, it starts to fill up a little before 6.

That's all I have, but I didn't have to look very hard to find these three so I suspect there are others. Does anyone want to add to the list? Anything in the old city, Santitham, along the river or other parts of Chiang Mai? I'd especially like to find a good beer buffet somewhere easily accessible by tuk-tuk or songthaew that also serves good spicy Thai food--that would be a great way to waste an evening!

Thank's for the post heybruce, I think these beer buffets can be quite enjoyable for a few hours nor do I find them full of drunkin louts. Why not save a few baht if you like having 4 to 6 over a few hours.

That describes them pretty well. I've never seen any sloppy, out of control drunks at these beer buffets. I can't say the same for Loi Kroh, Zoe in Yellow and nearby bars, or Spicy.

When I go looking for more of these buffets, Ill report back with findings. Good idea to share these around and also good for the venue....unless us TV types drink them outta house and home!

Maybe because people go to those buffets for their first six beers of the day rather than for their last six.

Also, would like to know how many beer girls are in attendance during buffet hours.

I agree that beer and eye candy are a great combination. The sushi place has four or five cute beer girls, but they stay pretty busy with very little time to chat with customers. Monkey Club had what I assume were their regular waitresses, which weren't bad. I didn't see any beer girls at Rush Bar, but all I did was a quick drive by.

99baht all you can drink for 2 to 3 hours and one of these gals bringing them to ya. Maybe a bit too much to ask Winnie.licklips.gif

Two additions to the Nimmanhamin list, for a total of five: Magenta, soi 17, all you can drink Asahi for 139 baht from 6 to 9 p.m., and a new place next to Wawee Coffee on soi 9 (I don't remember its name) also with an all you can drink Asahi buffet for 149 baht from 6 to 9 p.m. Clearly beer buffets aren't rare on Nimmanhamin.

I went to Rush bar yesterday and had a good time. It wasn't crowded, possibly due to it being a wet Tuesday evening, and the three young and pretty waitresses rarely let my glass get below the halfway mark. It has an extensive Thai food menu; the food isn't great but it's pretty good, and I like snacking while I'm drinking.

I may have figured out how these places can offer unlimited beer for a pittance--at the two beer buffets I've been to the beer hasn't tasted very fresh. It isn't bad, but the Heineken definitely didn't have the hops flavor of fresh Heineken. It's possible the beer distrubuters are letting these bars have kegs close to the "sell by" date for a considerable discount. Of course I could be wrong, most of the draft beer I've had in Thailand hasn't tasted all that fresh.

A note on demographics, they're about what you'd expect on Nimmanhamin. The buffets I've been to, and I assume the buffets I haven't been to, are 80% or more people in their twenties and thirties, and 90% or more Thai. However no one objected to my presence, and I'm not of that age range or nationality.

Nothing worse than bad beer heybruce! At the last free International concert at the big parking lot above Nimmanhaeman where Tawaan Daeng is, the draught beer being offered and served by the cuties was off. It was really nasty! Don't know what the problem was but it was completely flat and sour as well. Leo and Singha as I recall. One sip and that was it...bye bye 120 Baht for a jug. Everyone was complaining and the girls were bummed out. They said the money would come out of their pocket if it was returned. Stupid system. Ruined the vibe. Maybe it was past the "sell by date"?

Maybe past the sell by date, maybe just stored poorly. If beer get hot and/or old it goes bad. Beer needs to be handled carefully and enjoyed while young, much like, um, darn, I can't think of an analogy.

However the beer buffets I've been to weren't that bad. The beer didn't have the fresh, crisp, hoppy flavor of new beer, but it wasn't warm, flat or sour. There was one instance of warm, flat Heineken at the sushi beer buffet on soi 6, but I think this was because the jug was left in the sun for too long after it was poured.

The Habour 149 baht for Chang beer 6-9 pm

Do you mean the new Harbour shopping center on Huay Kaew, or is this somewhere else? What kind of crowd does it draw?

heybruce, there was a beer buffet at the Hliday Inn a few months ago when my wife and I went to the seafood buffet there. I remember it was B169 for Singha between 4-6 or 6-8 pm. I joked with my wife that they would go bankrupt if I went there often. My wife told me I wouldn't be able to drive if I did that. Well, I told her I needed a 'drinking' partner! She then told me it better not be a female! Anyway, the last time I went to Holiday Inn for the seafood buffet, the beer garden was closed ! Btw, I can't consume too much Chang though I like its taste!. Perhaps one day we beer drinkers can all meet somewhere and bankrupt the beer buffet owner?

Let's not let this idea die muchogra! I'm in Changer every 90 days to do my report and don't leave till the following morning so have all afternoon and early evening to make one of these buffets reconsider their promotion. If we get a few more posters on this thread to join us maybe we can make it happen.lol I think the posters are all male so perhaps no problems with the wife.....until you get home. PM methumbsup.gif
