We only have control of our lives in hindsight.

We only have control of our lives in hindsight.

:D Odd answer there, Bops. Mai kow jai. :o:D

When you make decisions you have only limited knowledge of the possible outcomes of these decisions. Like when you ride rapids or surf or skate you are part of forces that will play a larger part in the outcome then you. So, you have limited control at best. It's only after the moment passes that you look back and say "I made the right/wrong decision." Which creates the impression that you had control over what was happening, when in reality at that moment you may have had little to no control whatsoever.

All things happen for the good in the lives of those who love God. (Rom 8.28)

What I'm actually asking is do people feel that they are able to determine the outcome of their decisions? Decisions yield only two choices: you either get what you want or you don't get what you want. The particulars of how everything unfolds are not relevant, only the end result. How much control do people feel they have in actualizing what they want - the end result?

A simple example: you're driving in Thailand. How much control do you have in choosing the desired end result - you make it safely to whatever destination?

How much control do people feel they have in actualizing what they want - the end result?

None, but there are many different results in many dimensions.

For more on this, watch every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and try not to play any pocket pool over the world's most perfect non-Asian beauty. :o

Never watched it, UG. Is she worth posting in the Hot Chicks Thread? :D

Yes, yes, yes!

The show is great too, but the first year was for kids until it caught on as a cult thing and then it got weirder and weirder and better and better. :o

I know and I already answered, no. :D

I know and I already answered, no. :o

So you're more of a leaf blowing in the wind rather than a captain of his own ship?

I know and I already answered, no. :D

So you're more of a leaf blowing in the wind rather than a captain of his own ship?

Any good Captain will tell that the sea does what she wants and you had better hold on to your balls and pray. :o

It's like no mind. :D

Decisions and choices seldom give you exactly what you want . Controlling your life means making a series of decisions based on the outcomes of previous decisions made.

:o Now why did I say that

No matter what the seas, will you be safe or not? Is that up to you????

If your decisions don't give you what you want then why not? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. What's the common denominator?

No, just look at the Raft Of The Medusa.

So you're a leaf blowing at the mercy of the wind. You have desires, direction, but it's not within your power to reach the conclusion you wish, right? It's up to who or what then to waylay you? You're influence is insignificant and meaningless; without power?

"I am at the mercy of circumstance." You have volition, the power to think, the power to choose and the power to act. Yet it is all for naught since external forces have more power over your life than you do. So, the volition you have been blessed with is a joke - and perhaps a cruel one at that.

Let me rephrase. My decisions are going to be determine by the circumstances. So, I don't have control over the whole event, but I have control over myself. That doesn't mean I can alter the event or that I can't. I just have to accept that all outside of myself I have no control over. I do, however, have control over my being.

Still a leaf at the mercy of the wind. May it blow for you in a favorable direction. :o Just joking, Bops, but utterly serious nonetheless. :D

I guess you could say that. I look at it as more of a Buddhist view though and thus I am not really lost but like a factor of a physical phenomena I am acting and reacting to the other factors involved.

And they to you. The fact that 'other factors' react to you is something that escapes most. You do not dance with a partner who does all of the leading. Allow yourself to lead fully and your dance partner, 'other factors,' will follow.

No one is lost. Ever.

To be honest, not sure whether you were being serious or funny. Could be taken either way. I assumed you were continuing to be serious about the discussion. Mai pen rai.
