Greetings!

I am currently staying in TH on a O-visa and plan to file for the annual extension based on retirement in the first week of the last month of my current stay. I am over 50 and have manintained more than the required sum of 800K in a time deposit account with a local bank for more than a year now.

I also do have a savings account which I top up as needed from abroad to make locals withdrawasl and also use my foreign ATM to make withdrawals, or have at times changed foreign currency in THB.

Questions:

1. When I ask for my bank letter, does it suffice for the letter to list the funds in the time deposit account, or should the letter also list the balance in my saving account (which is usually around 150K)?

2. I do receive a pension from abroad which is less than 65K bht monthly, and/but I have assets in a foreign account in the equivalent of several million bht. Should I submit copies of those accounts, or is it enough to show my holdings in TH?

3. When checking my account balances, I realized that I live on less than 65K, I hope this is not an issue as I do have the assets required?

I appreciate informed feedback!

The bank should know what to provide.

Not a bad idea to include both accounts.

Make sure the bank book is updated to show the same balance.

There is no requirement to actually spend the money every month.

I would certainly struggle to actually spend that much a month.

1. Yes just time deposit required and have proof of foreign origin of that account money.

2. No need for additional paperwork if you qualify by 800k or more.

3. What you live on is up to you.

Re 1.The requirement is to show 800,000 in a bank account (fixed term, current or deposit) for three months prior to asking for an extension.

There is no requirement to show that the funds originated from abroad.

Also

If you have the 800,000 in an account in Thailand then do not confuse the issue with other accounts, pensions etc. Keep it very simple, people like that.

There is no requirement to show how much you spend.

Officers can and do ask for proof of foreign origin at times if not working in Thailand so I would have that proof (it is indicated on the passbook deposit record for anything recent). There is no need to specifically point it out unless asked.

If somebody is asking for a retirement extension they are not working in Thailand, so I do not understand that extra bit of confusion you put in there.

I do not know of a single case where the origin of the 800,000 Baht has been questioned.

800,000 in a Thai bank account for three months. That is all.

Anybody out there had to show where the 800,000 came from?

They look at the bank book, where deposits of foreign origin are indicated by code and the letter from the bank manager who also indicates deposits made in the last 3 months from foreign sources.

They certainly have the right to ask for an explanation of fund sources if someone is supposedly living in Thailand without working here. While some people might legitimately be sitting on piles of cash, most retirees would be expected to be renewing their funds from outside sources since they couldn't be generating money locally.

Are you on a retirement visa and have you direct experience? Or is this another "bar" conversation, where could, may and might are slung around by experts?

- I have never had to show where my funds came from, and the fixed deposit books I have taken do not have any indication where the funds came from.

- I have extended my retirement visa in four different immigration offices, never an issue.

- The letter from the bank manager only states the balance of the account at the date of writing the letter. That is all.

- In over a decade years I have not met, or heard of, a single foreigner on a retirement visa using the 800,000 Baht option who had to show where the funds came from. If this was really a requirement, then it would certainly be all over Thai Visa and well discussed.

Maybe you are confused with the condo purchasing requirement?

The only requirement is to have 800,000 Baht in a deposit or fixed term account with a Thai bank in Thailand for three months prior to extending the visa.

The only time that immigration asks for proof of funds coming from outside the country is when doing a change of visa status to get a non immigrant visa entry.
