OP, please compare the cost of medical care and insurance in Western countries against medical costs and insurance in Thailand, then I think you'll understand why Western people come to live in Thailand.

Obviously some of those socialist European countries have free medical care, so I have no idea why they come to Thailand

Sweden has free (almost) medical care, its a remnant from the the time when socialists where socialists here. It is good if you do not die while waiting for your turn. A private doctor is a far more better option, there you find the really good doctors, if you can afford it.

Not long ago i went to see a private doctor here for an allergic reaction in one of my tattoos. I waited 5 min. for him to show in a nice AC office with a stunner nurse smiling at me all the time. He examined my arm and consulted with the nurce and my spouse for about 10 min. He gave me medecine and cream. For this he charged me 140 bath for the medecine nothing for the work.

The good thai doctor did though look and me and my digusting arm like i was a sick dog or something, perhaps he pity my sad being to an extend that it would be shameful of him to charge me idk.

Most Thai's have no real perception of what it would be like to live and work in Western country's where laws are enforced, the 'Politically Correct' brigade are out in full force, as are the tax authorities, and the Nanny State monitors your every move. The motive for their desires, as always, is money, and the vast majority of them still have the idea that the streets we came from are paved with gold and that money is showered upon us by mega-rich relatives and generous employers.

We know that the realities of life there are very far from the way they imagine it. The first time i took my wife home for a month she was gobsmacked by our way of life and although she has been another three times she has no desire whatsoever to live there and is always glad to be back in Thailand.

am always super flattered how people here treat me as if I am somehow a very important person. I would never get that kind of treatment in a western country.

LOL you need to get out the gogo bars a bit more mate. You've got a VERY skewed view of how farang are seen and treated in Thailand.

In fact it is easier to get a good looking girlfriend in most countries that you are from than here. It might be easier to get some woman with classpirations but not a real relationship. Those take work wherever you are from and usually consist of having good conversation, trust, and respect (which seems most guys on this forum have little for Thai women)

It's difficult to spot a good looking women in the UK these days let alone find one to be your girlfriend.

I won't go more than a few minutes without seeing a good looking girl here in Bangkok. I don't want a gf out here I like to keep it casual but it certainly would not be difficult to get one I can guarantee that.

At age 60 it's fairly hard for an average Joe to find a good looking girlfriend in the USA, no problem at all in Thailand

I think 'girlfriend' might be the wrong word. 'Good looking' probably not too accurate either.

Most guys of that age are going to be shacking up with bar girls or seriously poor girls who are in it for the money not because they want him to be heir boyfriend.

Whilst they might be a lot more attractive than the 60 year old women he could get back home the women I see most farang with (especially the older guys) are usually far from attractive.

"Was it expencive for him?"

perhaps if you put the beer down while typing you might actually spell that correctly. I won't even answer that as it is the most stupid and ignorant post in this thread thus far.

I take that as a challenge. There's always room for improvement.

Westerners want to be westerners in Thailand, for the most part.

Very few westerners even want to become Thai citizens, and for those that do, it is VERY difficult. Very small numbers.

If you asked most western expats in Thailand would they want to be reborn as Thai or western, I reckon the vast majority would say western.

Or maybe they would say no. To shuffle off this mortal coil one time is surely purgatory enough for anyone.

Yeah, yeah, assuming you would have to be reborn at all (if so, hopefully a HUMAN please!).

Or a Rabbit.

The poll participants are all mistaken. What they actually want is to remain in Thailand, but receive western salaries.

Yet still do as little as possible, badly, for that money.

Not sure I'd agree. It would be great to be Thai with my money. But then I'd lose the western mindset...or not? All very confusing, so nevermind. Bottom line is we all want to have an advantage. Being a farang in Thailand can be both advantageous and a disadvantage. No one can have it all, all the time.

It's not just a poll Here the thread if you can read Thai http://pantip.com/topic/30842545

Perhaps you can just summarize the sentiments of the Thais in that poll for everyone to understand.

Clearly, it's not cut-and-dry. For instance, what if the poll were to ask to choose between: 1. Be born dirt poor to a poor family in America, or 2. Be born rich to a rich Thai family in Thailand. What then?

There's an awful lot of Americans born in the USA who are really not doing so well right now. Lots. It seems many Thais believe all Americans are filthy rich and by just being born there, your life is set. Not that way at all.

Not doing well but still free food, housing, education and medical!

99% of thais engaged in a relationship with a foreigner prefer to live and stay in Thailand. They don't know really to much about their country let alone about others. Familystructures are very important and in a strange country loneliness can get the upper hand. More income can compensate it for most to endure it. If i was a thai girl i would want to be in a relationship with an offshore worker. Best of both worlds.

This i can confirm from my experience, for the last 2 years i have spent ca. 20 months in Thailand during that time i have met only one lady who xpressed a will to go to the west and i have spoken to many ladies since they are rather talkative and far from shy. Many of them though would like to mary a falang who could build them a nice home close to mom so they can socialice to the max. This seems to be fundamental to them.

"99% of thais engaged in a relationship with a foreigner prefer to live and stay in Thailand"

and 99% of everything you believe is 1% based on actual evidence that can be verified.

What bothers me the most is that people believe that their own personal experiences are representative of millions.

People in general prefer to live where they are most comfortable and able to get the most out of their life. Those that adventure to other countries all do it for different reasons.

Broad brush strokes look good from a distance but when you actually examine things that you believe it would be better to actually have something that remains true.

And off course this personal experience of you should apply to millions?

I think most Thais would like to be born in Western countries for the education, the wealth they could earn, and then they would emigrate to Thailand to be near their families.

Quite often, when people answer polls, they don't think through their answers particularly thoroughly

SC

But if they are born in Farangland their family wouldn't be in Thailand.

true but well that is just pathetic......

This topic looks a bit lopsided to me. Or at least the desire of Thais who would prefer to be born in the Western countries.

There is no doubt that those Thais who would prefer to be born elsewhere have such desire looking at Farangs here.

This is a lopsided impression. Thailand is a very kind place for poor. They are not cold. They are not starving. They do not have to work hard for this..

True, the wealth distribution here is very uneven. But so it is in the West. Is it better to be poor here or in the West? Big question.

Long ago my ex said to me that she would prefer to have been born 200 - 300 years back. Similar attitude. It took me to show her that statistically she would have been a poor slave not the one of the rich nobility to cure her.

The pastures always look greener from afar. As they say, - "A stranger's dick always looks more appealing". But usually the novelty wears off soon.

Illusions... they are always calling us further and higher. The reality is often disappointing.

Let them have their illusions...

Is this even up for debate? I guess if you are male it is a more interesting question but for female it is not even close. In the USA a single Mom without a job gets something like $35,000 a year minimum worth of benefits from the government. In Thailand... she gets to --------------------.
