August 21, 201312 yr My 3-year-old iMac's harddisk has given up, and need a replace. I have TimeMachine backups so no problems. Where in Bangkok can I get a SSD disk installed? Any place you guys can recommend?
August 21, 201312 yr Www.macsales.com Their livechat will fix you up with the correct SSD. Have your model number handy Then, I fixit.com and look up drive replacement for your model. Quite straightforward, but you need the tools and macses do a cheap toolkit Never been charged duty on their stuff coming in either. ;-)
August 21, 201312 yr Ratchada Unlimitmac (www.unlimitmac.com) they have a small shop in Soi 32 (or 36) smart folks, fair prices or in Fortune the iStore (its a Very tiny store on 3rd floor named iStore in Pink letters. also great service .. owner regulary travels to Hong kong and get OEM Spareparts from the real Mac Service Center .. so he can make really good prices for original spareparts.
August 21, 201312 yr I have a spare 128 g ssd unopened in original bubble wrap, if interested. nowadays a 1 terabyte hd or greater capacity is available. in addition there are hybrid hd's, combining some ssd with a spinning disk to speed up things. I just had a ssd in my macbook and although a bit snappier than old hd I replaced it with a 1 terabyte hd. runs quite well and much greater capacity than ssd. a 1 terabyte ssd is very expensive. pm if interested.
August 21, 201312 yr You can also try ZEER Rangsit. It's near the Chokchai steakhouse (same side of the road) and across from CarrFour or Macro (can't remember which is closer) but most every taxi driver knows where it is. It's a 3 story mall dedicated to computers. They also have a "boneyard" in the back, downstairs.
August 22, 201312 yr OP, I suggest going to Pantip, getting one there. iMac, laptop or desktop. Anyway, I am sure if you can't take it there someone will come out and install it [if you don't know how, its quite easy] and do it for about 300 baht. I suggest check out some Youtube videos on how to install a SSD into an iMac. You will be amazed at how easy it is and experience the joy doing it yourself. Depending on the size but for about 256 GB expect to pay at least 6,000 - 7,000 baht.
August 22, 201312 yr You have to reinstall the OS or it won't boot properly. Get a professional to do it unless you are really hot with fixing Apple stuff (if you were, I somehow doubt you'd be posting this) Got mine done in Singapore - top floor of Sim Lim Square there is an unofficial 'Genius Bar' next to a shop called 'IDT'. The guy there is super nice and did about 4 hours work on my 2009 Macbook and never charged a thing, only for the hardware I purchased and now it is a real hot rod: 128GB SSD, extra 4gb RAM (total 8gb), enclosure for old HDD, remove superdrive and put old HDD into place of the superdrive, new battery). For bangkok, I know that the mac store Ploenchit BTS - Park Venture building 2nd floor is very good. They can most likely get you sorted out.
August 22, 201312 yr Do it yourself, you'll enjoy the experience, ezzy pezzy!!! Google ===> how to do a clean install of mac os x youtube
August 22, 201312 yr imac ssd upgrade from hd. U can do yourself its not the easiest of upgrades tho. some nasty motherboard connectors.
September 2, 201312 yr If you don't want to do it yourself maybe use the authorised service agent in Pantip Plaza, 4th floor, shop 411. These guys speak english and are priced reasonably
September 3, 201312 yr For do it yourself, the instructions online. However if iMac you need those suction cups to remove the glass screen front. There are two or three connectors connecting screen to motherboard and web cam to motherboard needing careful removal .. i.e when LED screen is about 6 inches opened. However important to note than if changing hard drives ... some of recent iMacs require specific hard drives with some special MAC ID. This led me to believe I'd have to change the HD at a Mac repair center. Read about it online. Not sure if the SSD's require some special Mac approved ID code or whatever. Again .. best check online using your IMac model number etc for other user experiences doing this.
