Ive been searching , without luck, on whether its risky to travel through myamar with my wife (away from the boarder market towns) . I appreciate that anywhere can be risky as its a question of luck as to who you run into.

Im keen to explore this beautiful country but I have concerns given the bad blood shared by the two nations over the years and the negative views many thais have of Myamar.

We would be mid range travellers so not staying in top end hotels.

Has anyone here spent anytime over there with thais or spoken to thais who have.

My good friend went there late last year with his wife for a 2 week trip. They had a fantastic time. We even talked about it last night over dinner and they'd both love to go back. So doesn't seem they had any issues.

Myanmar is really opening up it's doors to foreigners and seems Thai's will be one of the biggest groups of visitors. Especially with the new land borders opening up.

I'm planning a visit there in December. Can't wait!!!!

You're unlikely to have any problems with respect to your Thai wife - whatever Burmese people may or may not think, they wouldn't be so rude as to make it overt. However, if you're planning on going away from the standard tourist destinations, be aware that large parts of Burma are off-limits to foreigners. You need to do your research in advance because locals don't always know where's permitted and where's not. Also, you'll need to stay away from parts of the north where there is still fighting between the Burmese army and local ethnic groups.

Took a swift 2 week tour during June with me Thai missus and we both loved in and plan to revisit October. Try the Yangon-Inle-Bagan-Yangon lap for starters and would be very suprised if you come away unimpressed. I think you'll find Thai's are the highest % of visitors since the doors opened wide.

You'll both need visas.

Enjoy.

have had two friends move over to Yangon in the last couple of months, both have jobs and both love it,

say the Burmese are very friendly and the place is cheap ( except for hotels)

Burmese visa takes one day in Bangkok express service (apply morn . pick up afternoon)

or u can use one of hte visa on arrival online services ( but they charge $60)

the official Burmese embassy is gearing up to offer the visa online so keep checking here, https://www.myanmarevisa.gov.mm/index.aspx

there not ready yet but.....

I am planning a trip this fall as i have not been back since 1989..

If you do go, can you post a trip report here? I'm also trying to setup a trip. Would love to hear from you how it went!

You should have posted this topic in the dedicated Myanmar forum. Anyway yes Myanmar is safe and you can travel overland from Thailand now, just need a visa in advance.

Excellent point! Let's move this over to the Myanmar forum.

Thanks!!
