Fire in Bangkok 5pm today? Why no news?

Does anybody know why there are huge plumes of black smoke in the sky?

I am looking from Ekamai. Location looks to be southern Bkk.... maybe Sathorn or Silom or maybe Thonburi.

The smell is strong. I think it might be a petrol of some kind.

Nothing in Bangkok Post or Nation or TV from what I can see.

Big fire on Ratchipadisek road across from the lake. Fire services have been arriving for over 20 minutes but traffic blocking them.

Its beside Benjasiri Park, seems to be a low rise building, fire truck took a long time to come, big dark smoke...

Fire trucks were stuck in traffic because all lanes were blocked. A few even resorted to going the opposite way down the main road.

Numerous loud explains could be heard. Smoke is nearly finished now.

Well done by the BKK fire services!

Arriving in Sathorn (Surrasak) 20 mn ago I saw big clouds of smoke on the other side after the Lumpini.

Fire services were still passing 3mn ago at Surrasak

No more smoke. Fire trucks leaving. Now we get to see all the traffic sorting itself out.

I managed to take some video footage of the fire just after it started around 4:45pm.

Appears to have been some homemade housing just off the road. Walked by this morning to find people queueing for supplies from a government truck.

Best wishes to those who lost their homes.

According to the locals there were no people inside during the blaze. This morning I can see people digging through the rubble to see what can be salvaged, but the framework holding the roofing above their heads doesn't look very safe, so hopefully nothing collapses whilst they are in there.

Sorry Totster, I don't really use YouTube so I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to it. I've allowed embedding now though.

Looks as if the fire service has done a good job of confining the blaze to a limited area. Sad that people have lost the very little they probably had though.

Looking at the video it seems the fire pretty much burnt itself out.. I'm not saying the fire service didn't contribute, but...

Fire services have done an admirable job.

Actually, I thought they looked pretty incompetent, but I'm no expert.

I'm not an official expert but my old man was a fire officer. Grew up around that sort of thing and, to be honest, I'm impressed with the effort by the BFD (or whatever they're titled).

It would be quite difficult to "put out" such a blaze. They went for containment and succeeded at that.
