It seems the so called "crack down" is only targeting foreigners in Phuket - all the other issues will be resolved once this issue is fixed - And the guarantee that way up in the high ranking offices of Phuket Government this is the thinking.

What are the raids aimed at ?

Checking passports or something else.

I would presume that most tourist are not walking around with their passport when going out for a drink.

I think there is lots of going on in multiple fronts at the same time. This part might be targeted to illegal foreigners, but then again for example roadblocks are not.

The law is to carry your passport at all times.

If you offer anything else as ID, then it's at the discretion of the official if it will be accepted, or not.

I have seen this claim, but have also seen claimed 'copy is sufficient provided one can show original in a reasonable amount of time'. I would like to know what really is the truth here.

The UK Foreign Office website states that foreigners must carry their passport at all times in Thailand.

Many mistakes on all the foreign offices websites, e.g. requirement for IDP.

I'm really looking for a Thai government website information, but I can't find anything that indicates this requirement (or denies it for that matter).

Indeed it is very difficult to find the Thai law about this black on white.

Maybe i have to try harder.

I have pics of my work permit and passport on my phone.

Does anyone know if this is acceptable?

Might be Ok for a quick check by an officer looking to make fines from other people. Doubt it would be Ok for a serious check.
