I have a problem with trying to change my IP.

I have True 50MBS high speed service, and up to a month ago, I was able to change my IP address by simply rebooting the router. But now the system has changed and i am still getting the same IP.

I have looked at even downgrading to 10MBS to get off the DOCSIS system which we have been told by True that is the reason why the IP never changes.

But my wife has noticed that lots of people are now complaining that they have static IPs even on the lower speeds and that it is now also happening with 3BB.

Is this a result of the government spying on internet users in Thailand? This seems to have come after an announced crackdown on people using banned sites or coming out with inglorious comments about Yingluck. But nobody seems to admit it. But there is no smoke without fire, and a static IP would be very helpful for someone to monitor a data stream.

Does anyone know any way to force a change. I really need it done, I have a hacker that keeps getting into my PC, and I have all the security you can think of, but this guy is good. I think he has dropped a fork bomb onto my router. I have reformatted my PC 3 times and he gets straight back in. The reason is probably because he is targeting all data from My IP

I deal with very large sums of money from my home office, with trades of up to $100,000 a month and I don't feel comfortable.

I hate 3BB because their system has so much downtime, and has caused me to be offline sometimes for up to 4 days. I won't go back to them. True are very unhelpful. We have played with their support team for days now, and all they say is NO!

Using a proxy is ineffective if the IP is bound to this router, and even if we remove the fork bomb, it will come straight back.

This situation is ridiculous.

Grateful for comments or help.

Thanks in advance.

Can I ask how you know you have a hacker, and what is your definition of "all the security you can think of"?

I'd like to offer some advice, but your post is a bit vague.

Also, the reason you're probably getting the same IP is you are not letting the lease expire. If you have the option of doing it, try turning off the router for 25 hours, then see if turning it on again results in you getting the same IP.

And finally have you tried something like Shields Up to see if your security is as good as you think it is?

I'm assuming you have all the other bits and pieces, properly patched machine, locked down browser, Java disabled, up to date antivirus, possibly even a third party firewall like ZoneAlarm?

If you say a hacker is "getting in" very easily, and yet you think you have adequate defences, then there is a strong chance the hacker has something on your PC calling out.

Its not uncommon for DOCSIS system to have static IP addresses.

Try turning off your modem for at least 15 minutes so the end system will think you have completely shut down.

That doesn't make any difference. IP's might seem "static" just because they don't change, but most ISPs charge you if you want a genuinely static IP which is hard coded at their end.

This is probably just an IP that is "leased" to that particular circuit, and it will have an expiry duration if there is no response. You can set it to whatever you like.

Inside a LAN, you might set it at 168 hours.

But most ISP's probably use 24.

It use to be common for Thai ISPs to change xDSL IPs every 24 hours....that the way I was when I was on TOT xDSL and JINET xDSL...can't say for sure anymore since I'm not on xDSL anymore. I'm on True DOCSIS now (14Mb plan) and the IP address does change occasionally but it seems it's not uncommon for the IP address to stay the same for weeks to a month.

Something has definitely changed. Using 3BB and my dvr cannot be accessed anymore on the internet. I used the proper port forward according to port settings on my dvr machine. Port does not seem to be open and hence the problem. I use dyndns for the host service. Figured something might be wrong with my router as it doesnt port forward anymore. Bought a new modem router and same problem. The ip number shown on status of the router seems to be different from the ip number shown on whatismyip.com. if anyone can help me sort this problem would be great. I can see the dvr machine locally though on the same network.

called 3BB and sorted it out. Not sure what they did but the problem was but the ip assigned to my router seemed to be different from the ip on the internet. its now the same and port forwarding works.
