As a retired expat living in Thailand, my UK Driving Licence is about to expire later this year, as I will be 70.

If I dont renew it on time, (as I am not resident in the UK) is it possible to obtain a renewal at a later date when I next visit UK, say, in a couple of years?

M understanding is that you Actually have to be in the UK living, or have an address. I still have a UK address to sort this, but I ended up filling out the paperwork, and sending it back to the UK, when I needed a new Licence.

Your best bet is to just use your Thai driving license when you go back to the UK, forget the UK one if you intend to continue living in Thailand.

If you have a UK address (family) and your passport is less than five years old you can do it online,

A simple google search would have given you all the info you need.

https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

Just to add to John's advice above. If you have family, or a close friend living in the UK, who wouldn't mind you using their address - not strictly legal I know, and your UK passport is still valid, then you can do the whole thing on-line, with no paperwork having to be sent to the UK and for a fee of £20. They use the photo in your passport for your new license.

I'm no where near 70 but it now has to be renewed every 10yrs. I have have just done this using my son's address in Scotland. Piece of cake

Good luck

Your Thai License is good enough in the UK so no need to worry unless you plan on returning for good o the UK

Your Thai license will suffice for UK driving, but it is not regarded as an truly International license, whereas the UK license is and accepted as such all over the world. That is you cannot present your Thai license to a local country's driving license authority to obtain an equivalent local license.

One wonders why!?!

Because of the time lapse, you may, have to take medical, and an assessment of driving ability.

Dvla are the people to contact. Unfortunately many old codgers are allowed to drive,in the UK.

Absolute rubbish

As a UK citizen the UK license, precedes all other.

Or I could lose my Uk license for drink driving, then travel overseas and obtain a foreign license, then return to the Uk and drive legally.

Bulls--t.

Explain that logic to the judge.

I have to disagree with you there hedghog - what you describe is exactly what does, on occasion, happen. I have 4 different driving licences. UK, Netherlands, Singapore and now Thai. I never produce my UK licence if ever stopped by the police in the UK - although admittedly I never drink and drive. When i lived in Portugal I was once banned for speeding for 3 months. I handed in my Dutch licence and carried on driving with my UK licence. In the 5 years I lived in Portugal, I never applied for a Portuguese licence as they required that you handed in your UK licence, but there was never any problem driving on my Dutch or UK licence regardless.

Point of interest - in British English the word licence is the noun and license the verb

Not in the case of a Uk citizen.

As said I can advise the Op.

And am suitably qualified, not shooting the breeze.

Bye.

If the OP has say a motorcycle endorsement it would be prudent to get a motorcycle license here before the UK one expires. You never know? Same applies for any other endorsements like large trucks. It's like all government issued stuff take it while you can.

So our Spiky friend is going to advise the OP, by use of personal message only, how to legally obtain a UK driving license whilst not being a UK resident and he's 'suitably qualified' to do so?!? A word of warning to the OP - don't send him any money, or meet him in a dark alley.

I'm sure you can advice the OP, but that does not mean you give correct advice.

The OP can on a visit from Thailand to the UK legally drive on a Thai DL, no British license required.

It's very easy to renew your british license online.

Sent to your UK address within 2 weeks, not even expensive.

I renewed my expired UK license and changed my UK home address at the same time.

They used my passport photo, which I allowed them to access from the UK passport agency.
