Butternut Squash

Featured Replies

Has anyone come across Butternut Squash in Thailand?

If so, what should I ask for in Thai?

The pumpkin is round, the butternut is pear shaped.

They might be the same, I am not familiar with either, in fact.

Your opinion would help a great deal though.

Just googled it...yes it is and yes seen it a lot.

Saw it in Villa the other day, but outragiously priced as with everything else in that shop, something like 4/500b a kilo

I buy it where we live for around 80/90b a kilo.

You would happen to know the equivalent thai term for it, would you?

No, only pumpkin which is fukton...spelling irrelevant.....not sure what the word for that specific variety is.

My kids love saying fukton.

Anyway, thank you for the hope of finding it.

And pat your kids for me. I couldn't help giggling when I read the fukton :)

I use the pumpkin, fatong, instead of butternut squash. It is actually kent pumpkin and has a pleasant flavor but not the same as butternut.

It's usually available at Gourmet Market. However, they are somewhat smaller than the ones I'm used to in Europe (and quite a bit more expensive).

On occasions like this, the smart phone is worth it's weight in gold. They do say a picture is worth a thousand words.

The butcher's pictures of different cuts of beef and pork are especially invaluable to point at and grin wildly. I've even googled took screen-shots of Thai script when things look similar.

On topic, I don't recall seeing them on local markets, only in the supermarkets so assume they aren't grown locally.

Be the change that you wish to see in the world.

Hello All, saw some mini ones(400g or so) at The Mall Korat from the north,

should have at the BKK The Mall stores.

Were about Bt.40.

I planted 20 Acorn and 20 Butternut squash yesterday, 85 days to wait.

Hello All, as I said, they are mini's from the Royal Project, This was Bt.32,

enough for a side dish for two.

^ they taste very good...we get them from Jim Thompsons farm and a local organic grower.

The only butternut squash I have found in Bangkok is produced by Adams Organic. I buy it at the gourmet market in Siam Paragon(current price is 135 baht/kilo and the average size is about a kilo). Adams Organic also has a retail outlet on Soi Saladaeng where they sometimes have butternut squash for sale.
