Situation on Koh Samet after Oil Spill?

Featured Replies

Anybody been there recently, maybe living there? Are the beaches affected still? Would like to do a weekend trip with friends, but would love to hear about the situation first from somebody who knows first hand. Thank you very much. MS>

The main beaches have never been afected (e.g. Sai Kaew), the only affected Ao Prao Beach inkl. the resorts will be reopened 01.11.2013 and are now already with no visible or odur affects.

Concurrent thread running here:

I think the effects of the spill have pretty much diminished, leaving the baseline grunge to contend with. The linked thread has some alternative suggestions in the same general area that may be more satisfying destinations.

Enjoy your weekend.

Whatever the authorities say about the state of cleanliness at Koh Samet after the recent spill, I for one will give the place a wide berth for at least the next few years. It is very unfortunate for the people who make their living from tourism on the island, but after more than twenty-five years experience of the kind of fudges, mendacity and sheer incompetence in such situations in Thailand, I am not about to trust my health to a swim anywhere near there. Others may disagree.

The sludge may be gone but who knows about all the invisible contaminants like lead, mercury

Has any one ever heard of currents and tides?

One resident reply and the usual opinions to counter it. If you are really really worried about your health get a chart that shows where the currents and tides will take it. Those are the places I would stay away from.

Been stuck on Samed past month. No visual or olfactory evidence on hydrocarbon contamination.

The Thai peoples surliness on the island, has got even worse since the oil company has been paying out extortionate funds to them.

No need to put any effort in, when you have been paid in advance for doing nothing.

Payouts have not been very large and many not forthcoming.

I do agree it's a dump though.
