TAT: Tourism industry yet to be affected by flooding

BANGKOK, 29 September 2013 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) says the flooding situation in Thailand has yet to affect the tourism industry.

According to TAT Governor Surapol Svetasreni, despite the current floods in many provinces throughout the country, the tourism industry has not been sabotaged by the situation as tourist attractions are not damaged and the number of travelers is still the same, especially those foreign visitors, who still travel to places as usual.

When asked about the future of Thai tourism industry, the governor said the government’s 2.2 trillion baht infrastructure project would be the key factor contributing to the growth and stability of the tourism sector as travelers will be able to get to places easier and quicker.

The whole country could be flooded under 2 meters of water, and TAT would claim the number of tourist who enjoy sailing are breaking all records!

Get real- the flooding is ongoing like it does every year- terrible as it is, life goes on.

Tourist arrivals will increase by 20% by the end of this year. According to a reliably (wet water) TAT source the 257 already ordered hydroplanes will not be sufficient.

Here in Pattaya tourism has not been affected by the floods and the girls are making more money than ever.

They had the good sense to use floating ping-pong balls rather than ball bearings decades ago.

I don't think PR has ever been much of a deal here and people who are ' somebodies ', or think they are, don't worry about the feelings of inferiors.

Look at the insensitivity of YL and Plod, especially the latter, maybe he's technically correct that the floods are not " worrisome " but that needs a better sell to those affected once again instead of the Thai officialdom " I have spoken " style.

Maybe you should get real and put yourself in the position of the long suffering folks who live in the flood zones. Two years ago they were told in would never happen again and new flood prevention would be brought in, a week ago their PM said there's no flooding and there will not be and as the waters rose Plod weighed in with his " under control " comments.

Now these people are being told tourism isn't affected as if they are worried with a house under water and possibly not much in the way of relief aid.

Yes this happens every year as does every government's promises, the denials, weak excuses and public statements that are hardly words of comfort and sympathy.

Looks more like a desperate plea for the 2.2 trillion baht loan.

A broad sweeping statement backed up by no specific plan other than we will see to it that the money gets spent.

He figures that We are kids, are grandchildren, and great grandchildren should spend 50 years paying 5 trillion baht for a 2,2 trillion baht loan so that tourists can travel faster.

Not one baht of it to be spent on getting through immigration and customs in a timely manner put super sonic speed to Yala. Where they can buy a cheap trinket and stand around watching a vender figure out with the help of their calculator how much change from a 100 baht bill when the customer bought a 50 baht item.

Even worse yet if they were to get any High Speed Train Service it would only be to a few selected places and there by take away tourist business from areas with out it.

How about a bill instead to bring all rail service up to respectable standards concrete ties new road beds properly installed proper drainage and have it mandatory that all politicians work manually on the project (300 baht a day don't want to break the law) until the whole nation has safe rail traffic or a decent education which ever comes first. Should take about the same time for both. I doubt that bunch of dougheads would learn any thing bur Thailand would be a far better country. [Actually it would be improving a great country]

forgive the cynicism, but it has probably saved the government billions on the rice scheme, a way of saving face, without having to say no more subsidy, damned if you do, dammed if you don't!

Also when she said the flooding won't be as bad, she was really only talking about Bangkok after all, Bangkok is Thailand!

There must be something deeply seductive in comparisons to such boring cold countries.Obviously the warm moist weather and welcome overcomes concerns about corruption.

Absolutely. TAT is quite right to say tourism numbers are not affected by the floods. Public safety isn't even a factor it would seem. Even political chaos does not dampen Thailand's appeal.

The TAT comes out at every possible opportunity, to state, this or that doesn't affect Thailands toursim- from flooding IN Thailand to bombings in BOSTON!

And is not so much, that their numbers seemed to be flawed, but that they act like that!

"Oh...half the country is chin deep in feces...but the good news is: tourism is not affected!"

Where I come from, we call that "Fingerspitzengefuehl"...or rather: the lack of it!
