I have a prominent dust spot on my Sony Nex sensor which wasn't shifted by air. I took it to this small camera shop in Chiang Rai (none of the camera places in Central Plaza did cleaning). At first I thought I had another problem with the buttons not working but it turned out that went away (possibly through evaporation, hadn't used the camera in over two weeks) so just the dust.

So it turns out the dust seems to be between the filter and the sensor. He showed me this under magnification and it does seem to be the case, there is a small speck on top but the large piece of dust does seem to be "under" it. He says he can clean it but he'll have to disassemble the entire camera and sensor assembly to do it and quoted 1,500B.

He reckons if I take it to Sony they would most likely swap the whole sensor and it would be much more expensive.

Suggestions? Get this guy to do it or take the camera to Sony in Bangkok? He reckons he can do it in three hours which is an advantage, from prior experience with Sony they would take about a month and while this isn't an impossibility for me three hours would be more convenient.

I did think 1500 was pricey but he wouldn't take 1000. He actually offered to clean the filter for free initially but then we see the dust underneath. His shop is full of a variety of old and newer cameras and is pretty dusty but I suspect he might know what he's doing. Who knows.

Well my experience with Sony, it may take months for them to do this.... I won't ever buy another Sony camera because of the lousy repair service....

I would bite the bullet and go with option one!

If your camera is under warranty have Sony do it & perhaps buy a

2nd camera to see you through while you wait for Sony...if you

can spare the dosh.

If the warranty is no longer valid then have the 1500 Baht Man have

a go. If his work fixes it...great. If not...toss it into a river, have a couple

beers, then go out & buy any camera not made by Sony...such as

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax...etc

It's not under warranty, but I think I'm leaning towards getting someone in Bangkok to do it, this guy's workspace was just amazingly dusty.

I have a second camera as it is so I can live without it for a month.

I'm actually a big fan of Sony for cameras, my second camera is a RX100... Don't think anyone comes close to them in those sort of form factors.

Even on the warranty front I've had better luck out of Sony than I have out of Canon, who flat out refused warranty service even though the camera was only a couple of months old and fault was a well known manufacturing defect than Canon had issued a fuc_king recall notice on for my serial number. Because, I bought the camera outside Thailand. And Canon then charged me over 50% of the price I had paid for the thing to fix it. Fuc_k that.

I have had surprisingly good luck with Canon Thailand. They just returned my G12

last week after replacing the lens & motor assembly (Canon's Lens Error Warning),

charged me 3500 Baht and performed a thorough cleaning of the lil guy & it looks

outta the box new...and works just as it did outta the box when new. Mind you I'm a

Leica & Nikon shooter and these days the only Canon I have is the G12...use it as

a "pocket jobber". In the past I have owned, operated Sony BetacamSP broadcast

cameras and came to the conclusion long ago Sony's Professional Service was

only out for the money vice quality of service or repair. Your RX100 is a nice camera,

especially the lens...I hope you get many years of trouble free usage from it.

My issue was also the infamous "lens error", with a S100, but they charged me 10,000B.

Here's the recall notice; my serial was 41xxx, within the range.

I bought it in Phnom Penh only two months before and they refused to warranty it because "not bought in Thailand". Really really poor show IMO.

Blorg...I'd have been pissed off also. It used to be that warranties were international

some years ago...wish it was still that way today. Hell...if it had been me and I had

to pay 10K Baht to get it back I'd have pitched a huge fit & would have let em keep it.

Nasty thing the "lens error" especially with cameras that have externally extendable

zooms....common problem too. Good luck with the current dust problem...

To update on this, Sony in Bangkok fixed the button water damage issue on my Nex for under ~1,200B with a new part and threw in the sensor cleaning for free. (I think they have a policy of doing this free with any other repair, ~600-900B otherwise.) It is 100% perfect now.

The RX100 on the other hand they wanted 12,000B (seriously, the quote I got basically involved replacing most of the camera) to fix so I brought it back to the shop in Phnom Penh who diagnosed a broken focus cable and fixed it for $30. It has worked absolutely fine since.

Managed to pick up the 55-210 zoom lens for the Nex while there for $199 (retail is over double that in BKK) so was a good choice overall for a visa run.

Phnom Penh is very good for electronics in my experience, I got my RX100 there for $440 a year ago when it was (still is, I think) far more expensive in Bangkok. And recently, also got a Sony Xperia Z Ultra phone for $420 which is also much cheaper than here.

The lens was out of a two lens+body kit where the shop wanted to sell the thing with just the one. Don't know if I really need it or should have bought it but I guess it will give me some flexibility for architectural detail.

It's good for some stuff, not so good for other stuff, it's a bit random. But cameras and phones almost always cheaper although I don't think they have the Z2 there yet, or at least they didn't a month or so ago.

^^^ Thanks blorg. The Z2 is just a thought...seems decent with the water & dust resist

properties...still...I doubt it will make my coffee for me in the morning!
