DSI and Customs intercepted hazardous waste

BANGKOK, 10 October 2013 (NNT) - Thai authorities have intercepted a container of waste hazardous about to be shipped out of the country.

Acting on a tip-off, authorities were able to intercept a container loaded with hazardous industrial waste waiting to be shipped out of the country at a deep sea port in Samutprakarn Province, just south of Bangkok, according to Tharit Pengdith, the director-general of the Department of Special Investigation

The director-general said some local industrial waste recycling companies have breached the law by exporting and importing toxic waste for years.

Some dangerous waste dump sites are located in close proximity to communities and have caused health problems to nearby residents.

Thailand is a member of the Basel Convention, which strictly bans transfer of toxic wastes between nations for final disposal; particularly from developed to underdeveloped countries.
