Weng opposed to blanket amnesty to all as proposed by vetting panel

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai MP Weng Tojirakarn, a red-shirt leader, Monday expressed strong opposition to the version of amnesty bill of the vetting panel that seeks to grant blanket amnesty to all sides.

Weng said the red-shirt people insisted in their demand for the enactment of the original version of Worachai Hema, a Pheu Thai MP from Samut Prakan, as the bill seeks to absolve only ordinary demonstrators and would exclude the protest leaders and the government leaders from the amnesty.

Weng said the red-shirt people would find it unacceptable if former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuwan were absolved for their role in the crackdowns of the red-shirt protesters.

Weng said he believed that the Pheu Thai would eventually pass version of Worachai's bill as the party would heed the demand of the red-shirt people. He claimed that dozens of Pheu Thai MPs disagreed with the version of the vetting panel as well.

I don't agree with much of what has been said or done by some of the red leaders, but credit where it is due, if they are true to their word in this case then so be it. That said, I think amnesty should be only upheld for those who have been imprisoned or await charges relating to merely demonstrating. Those guilty of arson, terrorism, murder, assault or inciting violence should face the law - be them the wearer of a red shirt, yellow shirt or rainbow underwear.

Sounds right, I was wondering if this was the point where Thaksin and UDD finally don't see eye to eye, but as usual Weng et al are in total denial about their own responsibility towards the deaths. It's all apparently Abhisit's fault, as if Thaksin and the UDD leadership had no culpability in setting up the fatal clash (they set it up on purpose and well know that). IMO Weng should be sitting in prison still, not the lackeys.

Wang may remember enough of his youthful ideals to actually believe the things that he says. However, if past protests (like Somyot's) are any indication, unauthorised (by Thaksin) Redshirt protests will only have a handful or attendees.

Hopefully then all the Red Scum leaders, such as Weng will also be charged for their part in the death and destruction that they organised.

Wasn't there a topic a few days ago in which it was described that Pheu Thai executives were told to make sure that all the government MPs would be present for the next reading / vote and of course would vote according to their conscience as set by the great Thinker about whom this blanket amnesty bill has no relation at all of course.

Pheu Thai party list MP and UDD leader Dr. weng and friend Nattawut, Korkaew and a few others may have to choose between being a (sincere) Pheu Thai MP or a well-meaning UDD leader.

Of course some people are really good at twisting the possible meaning of a blanket amnesty for the well-being of cannonfodder and other people who are just a bit less equal than some (deserving) others, like our dear truly misunderstood criminal fugitive. Obviously all 'right' thinking people would understand and accept that.

Even if the red shirt leaders who are MPs under the PT umbrella voted against the edited amnesty bill in its second or third reading, I still think that the government's majority would enable them to get the votes needed to swing things their way. Whether this will lead to large street protests is still debatable. Personally, I think large anti-government protests won't occur, but a violent situation could be orchestrated by either side to manipulate people's view of what is happening, and ensure things escalate or are clamped down upon quickly to their benefit. We should know either way sooner rather than later.

That's easy. Abhisit and Suthep were government leaders and Thaksin wasn't and had nothing to do with running the demonstrations.......Apparently.

They don't need Abhisit and Suthep to 'not get off', they just need everyone to be pardoned. A somewhat easier proposition to achieve than the one you suggest above.

But the red shirts won't accept Abhisit and Suthep being pardoned, so the government need to work it so that Thaksin can be pardoned and Abhisit and Suthep not.

Weng and his wife Thida may still have the unenviable role of redshirt leaders but they have lost all credibility and influence. With their movement on financial life support from the Yingluck government they has little or limited political power, and are reduced to moaning in support of their pay master.
