The tax was cheap 420 baht, but the insurance was 1699 baht and from what I understand does not cover theft at all, and only covers damage to the motorbike if another car hits me. I have attached pictures of the bill and flyer with insurance rates.

The motorbike is probably worth around 40,000 baht and I dont like the idea of driving around without theft, which the agent told me was not available in Thailand. I also dont like the idea of not being covered if i were to run into a wall, or a ditch, and not be covered for repair at all.

Could this be true? If so, its a harsh reality.

(I wonder if there is a way to change the topic from THEST insurance to THEFT insurance)

For about the amount you have paid---I got a BUPA insurance that also covered myself & any passenger..., this was 5 years ago and after using it for a claim when I was hit by a truck, sold the bike after they repaired it & me....no it didn't include theft---sorry if I digress from the subject.

I received theft insurance as a package when I bought my bike new some years ago.

After that expired I couldn't find theft insurance.

In the end I adopted the advice from above....lock it up!

Don't bother with theft insurance, just use a padlock on the disk brake, only 150B !

https://www.google.com/search?q=disk+brake+lock&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&biw=1920&bih=1050

Organized gangs go around in pickup trucks and load parked motorcycles into the truck in broad daylight, it happened to my bike and other friends of mine, the padlock is not going to stop a theft.

Theft insurance is available, my advise ... go to the insurance office directly, there are many in big town centers.

Scoter/motorcycle theft is rampant in Thailand, especially at Pattaya. And all over the world, to be fair...

My CBR250 was stolen at Pattaya, the thieves picked the gate lock, broke the steering lock, then pushed it away, not bothering to start it.

Ironically I had enquired about better insurance coverage, theft + bail bond, about a week before the bike was stolen. I didn't buy the policy- lucky for the Insurance company but unlucky for me.

About theft, if the thieves really want your bike, they will get it. Locking/immobilizing your bike will usually make the thief move on to an easier target. But if the are skilled and determined, bye bye bike!

I've had half a dozen different bikes in Thailand and have bought theft insurance from the dealer with every one. About 2500 Baht for 2 years from memory. The shop I bought my last bike from said they could sell me another years-worth after the 2 year period if I wanted it. I've never had one stolen but is good for peace of mind and a great excuse for me to change my bike every 2 years which I like to do anyway!

I am just amazed at the rubbish and total miss information that gest posted.

Fact: full motorbike insurance is available, in fact several big companies offer it.

Fact: 1st class (Fully Comprehensive) is available for scoters

Fact: a padlock in the disk brake is not theft insurance.

I have a Yamaha 135, and have had full comp insurance for 2 years. Costs just over 4,000 Baht. I did not say it was cheep. My insurance is with the ANZ subsidary Safety Insurance. So if there is a valid claim they will pay out out. I also have my house insurance with them, its much cheeper. Go for a good insurance company, the cheep ones, juts like at home, womt pay when it comes to a claim, you only get what you pay for, especially with Insurance.

Tax is 100 Baht.

Government Complusary insurance that just covers 3rd parties costs 431.32. You can get it in the small shops/huts opposit the Land dept office, any land dept, they are all the same setup.

Basically you can get what every you can get in your home here, never listen to a Thai who says you cant do, it just means they dont know. Maybe inst not the sophisticated products that you get in teh UK, AUz, USA but the basics are covered.

For example I went to get a new tyre on my bike and was told that I need an inner tube, my bike has alloy rims and I know for a fact that you dont need an inner tube, this was by some dick head in a small bike repair shop, needless to say I did not buy there, went to a bigger shop and 20 min later I had a shiny new tyre with out an inner tube.

and it cost nothing for a songtaew to pull up next to it and lift it up onto the back. Two people can do that...in a blink of an eye. Happened to me. My scooter was parked just 5 meters from a security guard at the entrance to the emergency room at a hospital Had to run in and check on my son. It was legally parked. They will deal with the lock later. Get the insurance.

Only as a deterent. Doesn't matter what you lock it with. It's still easy to lift onto the back of any pick up. Then cut the lock off in less than a minute...

Edit, just noticed the same kind of post above. Insurance is the only way.

You overpaid the tax.

The insurance in normal rate, they have to take a very high risk. Many motorcycles are landed in Cambo, Laos and Burma. This is a national sport of some part of Thailand.

I have a Honda 200 cc tax plus ins was 800-900 for the year

That would be for the Government insurance which is close to worthless - nothing to do with theft insurance.

Stay away from the insurance company that has the name that starts with a "V". Not sure if they sell bike insurance but I can tell you they do not honor their policy statements on theft for vehicles.
