The kids both want tablets and I'm not talking Tiffy smile.png for Christmas, Now they are 7 and 9 years old so I am not looking at something that is too expensive but also don't want something that is going to stop working after a few weeks. I see some cheap but well reviewed tablets on Amazon so I know that they exist. Just wondering if anyone one has purchased a cheap but reliable tablet in CM and also where. I'm guessing Pantip would be the best bet?

Thanks all in advance

the best selection of cheapo tablets is upstairs in computer plaza and the boss man there knows his stuff and is very helpfull :)

the biggest selection of upmarket ones is in siam tv

next to the chinese consulate but they are spread out all over the place so you have to look for them

I would try to go with somewhat of a brand, as opposed to the more generic stuff a la Ainol, J-Phone et al. I'm also not talking super fancy, just Acer, Asus, Lenovo, those guys.

Then make sure it has a dual core CPU, and if at all possible 1Gb of memory and 16Gb or storage. (8Gb might also be okay but definitely not less)

And just look that the screen is nice and bright, the touch is responsive, etc.

I think Asus might have the edge currently.

But that's Thailand.. that sort of money pretty much buys you a 2013 Nexus 7 (also made by Asus, but with a much higher definitin display) in the US.

I will purchase a Nook h d+. Researched it alot and it is a good tablet. But it will have to come from the usa. $150.00 for 9 " .

Beware customs duty here-that is if it arrives at all.

Still waiting for small package mailed (correctly) in Europe on Oct 2. It seems mail, lately, has been slow/disappearing but maybe you know someone who can bring it in their luggage...

There are places in Chiang Mai where you can get 9" for much less that $150 rolleyes.gif

Amazon & Google Play are selling the pre-summer 2013 Nexus 7 pretty cheaply. I recently also bought a Nexus 4 on Google Play for a great price seeing that it's a quad-core with a great display and mini HDMI out. YouTube and even Slingbox look great on my plasma big screen.

I agree with going for the bottom end of the branded rather than the Chinese knockoffs seen at every mobile phone stall in every supermarket and mall. The Chinese unbranded things have battery and charger problems. Some people have no problems - we had problems with 3 of them - batteries are cheap though (but probably end up with more Chinese batteries here!) and the chargers can be replaced with branded ones (need to get a new charger port on a android tablet I have as the supplied charger killed it!). Internet is full of thread of people with problem Chinese devices bought of EBat - so caveat emptor!

A year ago I searched all local outlets and researched on web and thaivisa and the best bang for my baht was the Samsung 7 inch and got it for 5.9kTHB at the Samsung dealer. It seems that they will match any prices from other vendors.....

I'm sure that they have a newer/faster [and maybe cheaper] deal as it's a buyer's market out there in tablet land.

The 7 inch suits my kids young eyes but when I get my next one, I'll go for a larger screen for my older eyes.

A friend bought a 2nd hand one for her child, pretty good quality Samsung.

Worth thinking about if they're not too expensive.

I want to get a small tablet BUT it must take a sim. Otherwise I'm happy with the recommendations on this thread in regard to the Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 3. Are both these tablets available with sim-capacity and if so where can I be sure to find them in Chiangmai?

Thanks.

You probably know this already, but if you also have a smartphone (Android, iPhone or Win8 Phone will do) then you can make a WiFi-only tablet connect through the 3G internet connection via the phone.

For the extra cost of getting 3G built into the tablet you can also get a cheapo Android phone. And then you get the phonecall capability too. We got a cheap Huawei phone last weekend; was amazed with how well it works. (Ascend Y511; 3,490 Baht, 4.5" screen (480x854), 1.3 GHz Dual Core chip and half a thimbleful of memory. wink.png (Memory can be extended with a microSD card though, and the intended use is really just to use as a phone, tether 3G to the iPad, and a couple basic apps like LINE, Facebook, Gmail, Chrome et al.) So that's really just fine if you don't want/need your entire music collection on it, or play Asphalt 8.

Thanks for the comment and advice, Winnie. However the thing is a present and the prospective recipient is fixated about wanting the 3G built-in version - and isn't open to logical argument to the contrary.

The new Nexus 7 offers 4G LTE which would be backwardly compatible with 3G. The new nexus 10 will be released soon and I think it will have 4G LTE too. I've bought all of mine - Nexus 7 & 10 Manufactured by Samsung and a Nexus 4 manufactured by LG. I've bought them all on Google Play since it offered the best prices.

Do not under any circumstances buy a cheap Samsung Chinese knockoff. I did and it's slower than a lame donkey - just unusable!

I bought the I mobile I note Wifi 3 in chiang mai (I mobile shop at central airport) and I am really happy with this product.

4000 bath, goods specification,

Chinese electtronic products (at least most popular brands) are really a good value for money. (but I wonder if I-Mobile is not a thai brand)

I already have a nice Samsung 10" tablet, but for anyone else looking for one there is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 for sale at the moment on www.secondhandchiangmai.com
