Suthep camps out at Govt Complex

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- After marching for four hours, protesters led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban decided to stay overnight at the Government Complex Wednesday night before moving on to their next rallying point.

From 9am, Suthep led protesters in their march to the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road from the Finance Ministry on Rama VI Road.

Members of a motorcycle convoy at the vanguard of the protest on Chaeng Wattana Road blew whistles and shook rattles - providing atmosphere and moral support for the marchers along the way.

The protesters arrived at the Government Complex in the afternoon.

Thousands of people rallied in front of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) office near the Justice Ministry at the Government Complex. The DSI closed its doors at 11am as director-general Tarit Pengdith went to work at the Parliament to help Justice Minister Chaikasem Nitisiri set up a war room.

Passersby stopped by to join the protest against the department, complaining about charges it had pressed over Suthep's role in the demonstrations

Benchmark rate cut by 0.25% following shaky economy and political row

BANGKOK, 27 November 2013 (NNT) - The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decreased the policy interest rate by 0.25% and a 2013 GDP growth forecast to 3% following the weak economy and political instability.

Secretary-General of the MPC Paiboon Kittisrikangwarn said the committee’s meeting on Wednesday viewed that the economy tended to grow less than expected with higher risks. As household debt was likely to slow down, the committee decided to relax monetary policy more in a bid to reduce risks and support Thailand’s economic recovery.

The MPC therefore cut the policy interest rate from 2.50% to 2.25% a year to be effective immediately. The committee also decreased its GDP growth forecast for this year from 3.7% to 3% and projected that the 2014 GDP growth rate might edge down from 4.8% to 4%. The MPC however foresaw that the economy would start to recover next year.

As for the third quarter this year, the committee predicted that the economy would expand less than expected following gloomy spending in the government and private sectors and weak export recovery. The committee also warned of risks caused by slow government investment, fragile confidence of the private sector and political disturbance.

CAPO mulls issuing arrest warrants for other protest leaders

BANGKOK, 27 November 2013 (NNT) - The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) is planning to seek court approval to issue arrest warrants for more core leaders of the anti-government protests after a number of ministries were taken siege by demonstrators.

CAPO Spokesperson Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayo said police are gathering closed-circuit television footage, photos from media outlets and statements from ministry officials in a bid to press charges against additional core leaders.

Three protest leaders, namely Mr Nitithorn Lamlua, Mr Uthai Yodmanee and Mr Ratchayut Sirayothinpakdi, are set to be charged for unlawful gathering, instigating violence and damaging state property during their invasion on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, Ms Anchalee Paireerak, Mr Samran Rodpetch and Mr Satit Wongnongtoey will face charges of provoking demonstrators to break the law.

The announcement came after the Criminal Court had approved an arrest warrant for rally leader Suthep Thaugsuban on Tuesday for illegal assembly and invading government offices.

The center has also issued a ban on carrying firearms or objects that can be used as weapons in public in a bid to ease fears over escalating tension. The move is aimed at controlling the situation and preventing possible acts of violence from the anti-government protesters.

RT@Aim_NT: To win this fight to get and return the power to the people, Suthep said he would have yet to break the laws for many times.

RT@Saksith: Well, the arrest warrant is apparently valid for 10 years - so Suthep can (theoretically) take all the time “to eradicate Thaksinism”...
