Complete list of pharmacy drugs available in Thailand?

Recommended Posts

I'm outside of LOS at the moment, and wonder if a particular drug will be available when I arrive. Sometimes drugs that are readily available in Europe or America are simply not available in Thailand. It would be nice to have an online list to search, with the same info that the Thai pharmacists refer to when you ask about a drug they don't know about. Anybody know of one?

Simply because a drug is listed in MIMS doesn't mean that it's readily available - particularly if it's imported. The pharmacy may well respond "no have" or (as happened to me recently) "prescription only" to get rid of you. Too much hassle to make a special order.

I suggest you name the drug here (as many others have done in the past) and you'll almost certainly get an opinion on its availability.

The referenced source also lists the manufacturer and distributor and contacts for same. If a drug that is listed is proving hard to find (even at large pharmacies) call the distributor and w=ask for names of pharmacies to which the drug has been supplied in our area.

Also, always show the pharmacy staff the name of the drug you want written down in clear block letters as they have trouble understanding drug names when spoken by farang and will always use "no have" as default position. And try to find a pharmacy with an actual pharmacist behind the counter (rarer than you'd think) as many have completely untrained staff who do not recognize many drug names.

Re the prescription only, in MIMs (referenced source) there is a line fr Thai FDA category. If it is D or ED, it does nto require a prescription.

As a general tip, pharmacies close to a large hospital tend to stock a better range of drugs than ones in other areas. In Bangkok there are a number of large pharmacies around Victory Monument that probably have the best availability in town.

I am trying to see if Thailand pharmacies have stadol or buthorphanol  nasal spray or 2mg/ml inj.

Last I was there in 83 it was no problem. In U.S, it is a schedule IV. I am burned out on oxycodone and dilaudid. Anyone out there in the know? <<<<Email removed, please PM function to contact>>>>>

I am in Thailand now and have a nerve giving me trouble on my right hand up to under shoulder.  U.S. doctor prescribed Percocet and Valium to sleep.  I, also, was given a hand splint and sling.  Happened just before trip.

I did not bring the drugs in as I did not have time to go through the procedures.  Looks like I need the same class of drugs the OP is asking about.

What, if any, drug equivalent might be available.  I am taking horse pills of 800 mg of Ibuprofen three times a days.  Hot baths here are helping but not improving.

Thanks OP for the thread.

Butorphanol doesn't appear to be available in Thailand.  It's an opioid.  All opioids are very strictly controlled in Thailand, and only available through hospitals.  Getting a hospital consultation is your only (legal) chance of getting a drug of a similar type.

As above. The range of pain killers here is more limited than in the west. Fot outpatient use pretty much just NSAIDs, tramadol, paracetemol with codeine, and morphine. The last 2 can only be gotten from a hospital (ditto valium) and Thai doctors ard very, very reluctant to prescribe them for other than short term use or terminal cancer.

For pain radiating from hand to shoulder you need to find out the cause. Likely either a shoulder or cervical spine issue with nerve compression. Treating the cause is far preferrable to masking the symptoms with sedatives and opiates. See a good orthopedist.

For types of chronic pain not amenable to treatment of the cause the thing to do is to see a pain specialist. There are Pain Clinics in all major government hospitals and pain /palliation specialists in the larger private hospitals. These do not hand out opiates as freely as their Western counterparts, there is more use of things like nerve blocks and adjuvant drugs but this is not an altogether bad thing and they will give judicious amounts of opioid if absolutely necessary. Keep an open mind and avoid demanding specific drugs as this may cause you to be labeled a drug seeker/abuser in their minds.

I am sure there is a fiull list somewhere - maybe on Thai MIMS site

Best suggestion is to type generic name of drug followed by thai mims into google (trade name may work in some cases)

e.g. mesterolone thai mims

gets you to page - look for available brands box top right

http://www.mims.com/thailand/drug/info/mesterolone?mtype=generic

can also type into MIMS direct and look for drug under class of drug.
