Thai soldiers kill 37 Cambodian loggers in 11 months: police

Featured Replies

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 37 Cambodian persons were shot dead by Thai soldiers so far this year when they had illegally crossed border to log rosewood in Thai territory, a local media reported Friday.

"During the first 11 months of 2013, up to 37 Cambodians were shot dead by Thai authorities as they illegally crossed the border to log rosewood in the mountains on Thai side," a well-known Khmer news website DAP quoted Lt. Gen. Dam Vuthy, deputy chief of the National Police, as saying in a meeting with border police in northwestern Banteay Meanchey province on Friday.

He urged police along the border with Thailand to strengthen security and prevent Cambodian people from illegally entering Thailand for logging.

Last year, 45 Cambodian loggers were shot dead by Thai soldiers.

Cambodia shares a more than 800-kilometer-long border with Thailand to the north and west.
