Where can I buy 8mm toughened glass in the Chiang Mai area. I am making a water table and I asked the local glass supplier in Hang Dong for 8mm glass and they only had 6mm (it turned out to me ordinary glass as it exploded within 10 minutes) so I used it anyway.

I guess it can be made to order somewhere in Chiang Mai. Thanks in advance.

what are you calling " toughened glass"

is it what a windscreen is made of , 2 sheets with a clear plastic in the middle ? if you are good you can cut it , and use lighter fluid to soften the center plastic so you can cut it , that is how you make a chopped windscreen for a custom car :)

or is it normal glass like the side windows of cars that when it shatters goes into many small pieces ?

We would call that tempered, I have done this for my cars many times

you cannot cut tempered glass AFTER it is tempered , you cut it first , then send it to another shop that tempers it

I have another glass question , can you get glass with a wire screen inside the glass like old banks had for the front doors ?

You mean laminated glass, sandwiched with film. Its used for shop fronts for security.and windscreens.

Other car windows and patio doors are generally toughened glass, heated to such a high temperature.

Almost impossible to break them with a hammer, but when they break they shatter into thousands of tiny pieces

But 6mm or 4mm toughened as they use in house windows should be adequate, they use the 8 and 10 stuff for deep aquariums and the like.

Incidently if you are using laminated flat, with weight on it....it will crack as its only plain float glass (generally)

What I am building can be compared with a double glazed unit, but I am pumping water through it to create a water table feature. Pumped water through it using an aquarium pump for about 10 minutes then I turned it off and almost immediately the bottom glass shattered into many pieces. Have not ruled out a slightly uneven base that the unit was resting on but it has shown that the use of normal 6mm glass can be very dangerous. I will make 100% certain that the base is perfectly level but what I need is glass that will not be dangerous if it is broken. I guess the use of aquarium type glass should be more suitable if that is safe in the event of breakage. My first water table I used the 8 mm glass from my coffee table which has about a 100cm length of unsupported glass and that has never broken so I need two pieces of that type of glass for the new water table.

As a guide.

Clear float glass, 3,4,6mm is what it is,cheap, breakable, and leaves dangerous chards. Should only use it in single glazed windows, greenhouses, mirrors etc

Laminated, two pieces of glass stuck together for shopfront security. Throw a brick at it and it will leave a concentric spider web pattern, no shards normally fall as they are glued. But to break through almost impossible.

Toughened glass, this is the most expensive, I would guess here around 2000bt plus /m2. If you use this in a shopfront and throw a brick at it......haha.....you are likely to be killed yourself when the brick bounces back at you.

The weakest point of a toughened window is the corner and needs a ball hammer or......what car thieves tend to use, a spring loaded centre punch.

When it does break the whole pane will fall through because it was set in "tension"

I still don't understand your application but sounds line pressure is the key, therefore go for toughened,,6mm should be ok unless you want to construct an aquarium like at airport plaza or the zoo.

I would also guess you need to order as no merchant would stock it. Made to measure literally

Thanks for the info everybody. After some searching around the Hang Dong area I was directed to a big glass company on the way to Lampung. They can order "Tempered Glass" and it takes about one week for delivery, "Laminated Glass" takes about 2 weeks. So I ordered two pieces both 120cm x 60 cm Tempered Glass. At about 760 Baht for clear glass and about 1000 for Tea Black. The clear glass Tempered was actually slightly cheaper than I paid for normal 6mm float glass in Hang Dong. Some difficulty explaining exactly what I needed but hopefully I have ordered exactly what I need.

Anyone know a shop or company that can supply curved glass like car windscreens (laminated) , and rear curved glass (tempered) either in Thailand or SE Asia

small runs 5-10 up to 50 pieces on some

yes it is for old cars.....

Big place set back from the road on the West side which wholesales to local glass shops. Been years since I was there so can't give you landmarks.

@keithkarmann

I hope you have managed to convey what you want. Personally I am a bit doubtful when you say it was cheaper than the float glass...and at 750bt this is also ridiculously cheap.

Remember your use of the word "tempered" does NOT mean toughened.

Tempering is a process to convert "raw" glass into clear float OR toughened.

Toughened is when the tempering process heard the glass and it is cooled rapidly.

Float is made when it cools down slowly

And at around 8 million baht for the tempering oven, you sure do need to get some work out of it....or you charge 2,3,4k baht/m2

But hey, if you pull it off....you have done one better than me today

Can you tell me more clearly where this glass company on the way to Lampung is? I live in H.Dong.

If you drive from Hang Dong go past Saraphi and the turn off for Bante and eventually you pass a PTT station on the left, when you have past the PTT take the first u turn and the glass place is about 200 meters on the left.

Only time will tell. Hopefully sometime next weekend I should be able to install the Tempered glass into my water table and start to pump water through it. If it breaks then I will have to have a rethink. But in the office of the glass shop you are surrounded by glass (doors, partitions, and table tops) and they said the Tempered glass would be strong like that. Maybe next weekend I will not put washing up liquid into the system to create more bubbles.

First Im told Lampung direction, but your saying it is at the opposite (toward C.M.) from Hong Dong.....

If you travel from Hang Dong on the way to Lampung you pass Saraphi, then you pass the big TOT building which is close to the Bante turn to the left, then you keep traveling towards Lampung until you pass the PTT petrol station on the left then you do the "U" turn.

What is a water table? Do you mean an aquarium in a coffee table????????????

Never seen one before, I just woke up one morning and thought it would be a good idea to make one as I have plenty of spare time. If you can imagine a double glazed window with inlet and outlet pipes connected to a pump which is sitting in a purpose made reservoir. The unit is inset into a purpose made steel table. This is the mark 2 version as the mark one table looks a bit scrappy. Hopefully not all the air is expelled from the unit and the bubbles create a nice effect (at least it did until the normal float glass broke). The mark one version had a waterfall where the water came out but the design was more for the waterfall and all the air was expelled and you could not see the water travelling though the table.Yes you can go and buy many different water features but I like to be different. Not realising how heavy things were getting I weighed the reservoir and it weighs 27kg empty and it holds 25 litres of water.

I wondered also.

Sounds akin to the vertical ones you see out and about. Two pieces of glass, water pumped at the top and creates a waterfall effect on both sheets.

The top is open, as you say pressure will blow it apart.

If yours is horizontal you will have 2 foreseeable problems.

Keeping water in and how to clean of the green algae that will cover the glass in a number of days.

But what great challenge thinking of how to get a successful design.

Please photo it when or if you have another problem, it keeps our minds active as well

Having looked after a swimming pool for 8 years I managed to keep it algae free all that time, so using the same procedure I plan to mix a little chlorine in the water and see how it goes. The algae problem would be increased if it was exposed to the sun more so I plan to keep the sun off the table. Not sure if it would help with the addition of washing up liquid, it would keep it clean inside but maybe that's why it blew up with the extra pressure. Yes we have to keep our minds active. Will take photos or video when I get it working again. The mark one table has not gone green inside the glass.

Water table up and running now with tempered glass, no major problems just a bit of tweaking. Looks like a giant spirit level.Photo attached (hopefully).

can you make the next one like a flat laval lamp ?

at one time I wanted to make a lightning table , basically a flat neon sign, engraved into one panel and sandwiched with the upper panel,

the electric charge follows the engraved channel .

A little more complicated than that as you need to know who neon signs are made and how you evacuate all the air out of the "tubes"

Sounds a bit complicated to me but you never what ideas I may have when I wake up next time.

Now I see what you meant by water table. Better said a table with water in it. Now try to make an aquarium inside a table. I have seen many commercial ones.
