Richard Barrow and other tweeters on site report that the protesters have failed to break in at Metro Police HQ and are now withdrawing to the main protest site. No one reports live ammo being used.

Watching Blue Sky around 1200 hrs today and it was interesting to see that military medical orderlies and I presume possibly a qualified medical officer were circulating through the anti government demonstrators and treating those suffering from tear gas inflicted injuries.They were (the military personnel) also taking pictures openly of those treated and also the surrounding crowd in general.

Interesting to note again there seemed to be no hostility towards the photographer nor the medical personnel.

There would seem to be noting the above scenario a hatred of the police as opposed to the military.

One is led to wonder if there might be an unspoken loose alliance between certain factions involved in these demonstrations:

Mind you, her brother in law ex-PM Somchai had really similar circumstances, storming of government buildings, Government House, lots of police, exploding teargas canisters and a few dead anti-government protesters.

The moment one of those protesters die at the hands of the police Yingluck is dead meat as PM. As will be the murder charges against Suthep and Abhisit. Silly little girl should have stayed at home playing with her Barbie Dolls instead of puppertering for her convicted criminal brother.

On the contrary, she is doing a remarkable good job under very difficult circumstances. She has gone up in my estimation even though I don't care for many of her policies. If one of these thugs gets killed, then sorry...but it could have been avoided very easily .

Using tear gas (especially the cheap chinese one) is obviously an abuse of deadly power. Anyone who give that order (to use gas) must be trial in court, because the protesters come in peace.

No. Its use for riot control is an internationally accepted norm recognized by every international treaty for human rights. G7, G20, your home country all accept this as reasonable non lethal force.

In the US for one they would get gassed and tasered for a lot less than that, and if any of them was seen holding a molotov or anything that remotely looks like a weapon they would end up full of bullets.

The Thai police have been ordered to use the least violent means possible and are obviously starting to chafe at the restrain.

By hijacking the 2010 deaths and exploiting them, the government and the way it pushed the DSI to put Abhisit and Suthep in the dock. They have basically set a precedent. They have ended up tying their own hands, and the first sign of the police killing unarmed protesters will bring down a heavy load of crap onto someone's aircon unit.

The PM's situation is quite interesting. Previously she has always been shielded or been able to say she had no idea what was going on but now the buck has stopped with her. She went to a meeting with Suthep last night, probably under pressure from the military, knowing full well that in all likelihood he would take the opportunity to repeat his demands to hand power to his people's council on the grounds that her government has grossly violated the constitution by refusing to accept the constitutional power of the Constitutional Court. Today Suthep has had the pleasure of watching her proclaim that she cannot accept his demands because that would meaning violating the constitution which she has already demonstrated she is willing to violate for her own purposes.

It seems to be gamesmanship. If Suthep had demanded that she dissolve Parliament, that would let her off the hook too lightly and she could either continue to protest that she wouldn't do that because it is against the wishes of the people who elected her, or pretend to comply partly and then renege, once the protestors had dispersed and Suthep and other leaders are safely banged up facing treason charges. Suthep has bitter memories of Thaksiin's gamesmanship when Abhisit negotiated with the red leaders and Veera was about to agree to Abhisit's offer of elections by November when Jatuporn received a message on his phone and immediately declared that the offer was unacceptable, resulting in the consequent deaths of red shirts and burning of the city.

Suthep wants her to be forced to dissolve Parliament and be forced to resign as caretaker PM to pre-empt the possibility of backtracking. It is a high stakes game that could still go either way but the strain is already showing on Yingluck and she could be close to cracking. A few more deaths of protestors could result in an ultimatum to her from the military and she might go off on one long overseas shopping trip. The police are up against it with the protestors moving earth movers and their own water cannons into position against them and no hope of any back-up from the army who will just stand by and wait for opportunities to be seen as good Samaritans rescuing citizens in distress.

Here in Cairo, the police killed over 900 protestors in the course of several hours as they cleared a protest square, victims included men women and children. Where do you draw the line?

How about the Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands are peacefully protesting? Even now in egypt, all protesting is technically illegal, there are still thousands of brave protestors turning out each week to voice their democratic rights.

In the long run, people power is effective.

I don't have an issue with the police using appropriate crowd control methods, in fact UK the police would have waded into them pretty quick. What to me is the issue is that when this happened with the Red Shirts in 2009 and 2010 the police backed off and did nothing, so that suggests to me that along with morons like Tarit , that RTP at present are not neutral and are under control from a criminal in Dubai.

Whatever way you look at it, it's a seriously screwed up situation which both sides of the political divide have a significant part to play in it. Sadly, with the likes of Thaksin and Suthep squaring up, there's only one loser, and that's the people of Thailand.

The government has responded to International Standards.

The US, EU countries all use, as needed, tear gas, batton charges, dogs, horse charges, rubber bullets to deal wtih riots.

She will only get into trouble if she issues an order for the military to go out with live ammunition to shoot people, like the Army did in 2010 under the orders of Suthep and Abhisit.
