OK for those that were waiting to hear back from me about my GF getting a tourist visa for Australia....

She got it... and this is what she had to get it...

To give you a good indication of what you will need... see the following

1 - The first thing you need if you think your Thai friend is going to have problems is a statutory declaration found here for the Aussies "Stat Dec" PDF format... You can import this to MS Word and fill in the spaces.

In this you need to declare that you "can" and will support them in the following ways... Financial, Accommodation, Meals, Transportation and be an informal guide. Go into detail about how you can do that.. and make sure u get a copy of your employment status and pay rate or proof of residence for accommodation yadda yadda. You do need proof that you can actually follow through with the above......

Also state what the flight dates are.. how long he/she will be there for and most importantly ... get a Justice of the Peace to sign this document and any other copy you have of your details,, (passport, licence, proof of address, proof of employment) which makes it a legal copy and also looks very formal :o JP's can be found in your local court or there is a list of registered ones on the net somewhere.

2 - Proof that you Thai friend plans to come home to Thailand again... E.g. they need to get back to Uni or they have a job to get back to. Unfortunantly some girls are taken to Australia by some nasty pimp with the intentions of offering their hot little body for a dominos pizza and a western union transfer to their olds and sadly... some with no choice in what is really gonna happen once they get there ...

3 - Most importantly... for your stat dec to be accepted, you need proof of your relationship.. If any of you have looked into taking your non-AUS wife to AUS you will have found out how much you have to prove your relationship is genuine.. They will want to know that she is not going to end up in a darwin river for dealing with the wrong customer.... if you seen the latest news that is...

4 - Dress. If your friend goes to the embassy looking like she, or he for that matter, just "got off work" you can kiss ur tourist visa hopes goodbye... As the good Dr mentioned earlier on in this thread "Females between 6 and 60 are always treated as if they are on a meal break from the streets of delights"

There are some other advantages that its good to have .... and its a MUST for your friend to have a decent amount of money to survive in AUS for atleast a month..

Anyway im sure the list goes on so anyone else should feel free to add to my list.. in the mean time... To anyone who wishes to take a friend to the land of Vegimite, Lamingtons and Victoria Bitter.... good luck... I hope the above gives you a good idea on whats needed....

Cheers all... hope this helps...

Good for you Koh Falang. Congratulations. How long did they permit her to stay in Australia ?

They have stat decs at the embassy and get one of the staff in the immigration section to sign it. They will probably try and send you to the consular section (where it costs money for this service), but just insist it is their responsibility and they will reluctantly do it.

The local staff there are a law unto themselves and yes they dont really seem to care, but I did have one win. I would be interested in the names of the case workers you blokes have dealt with and I reckon one would feature prominantly. PM me with the name if you want, I dont think posting it would do anyone any favours.

Koh,

did you this process from within Australia? I didn't need any stat dec when I did mine, just a letter from me.

Most of the rest was about right though. You prove it wont cost the taxpayers money and they will return.

I also didn't need proof of an airline ticket, just approx dates so they could use it for the start date of the visa.

manfromoz,

the main point of my reply was to let you know what i could do to improve my GF's chance of getting her 3 month holiday Visa...

I wrote it on stat dec because i want to do the most i can do to help her get here and i assume a stat dec would just look a bit more official. I printed this all out.. signed everything with a JP and sent it to my GF who took it with her to get her Visa.

I would tend to disagree with mattnich about getting more then a 3 months visa because there is always a way to get what you want... so never write something completly off. Also just remember that in AUS people tend to stick to the letter of the law more. They have to follow rules more and keep to protocol and they are not as laid back. They wont bend the rules espcially for you so if you piss them off... complain and make things stressful for them.. they will go out of their way to make sure u dont get what ur after. I suggest sending everything over for your friend in thailand to show. I think u got more of a chance to get it done on the day in BKK. My GF said she just went in showed them the basic stuff... they asked for more proof about our relationship... she gave photos and emails and letters... they said... no problems and that was it. Finished. Another thing is.. all the emails and letters between me and my GF were in English. she said that kind of helped. not sure why but anyways. Dont worry about bothering the embassy for stat decs just DL it off the immigration site.. import it to word and type ur statement. looks better i think. Then u can do what u want with it. A JP at the local court will sign it without asking too many questions and also any copies of documents you have making them a legal copy

In general i would say... the more you have the better chance you have of getting it.. spesh if its an old bloke with a 18 yr old chick... sorry to point it out but that just makes it 2 times as hard i think.. better not to go at all with ur girl to the embassy if ur old enough to be her dad... No offence intended if that be the case :o

By the way... i go into detail because i feel people want to know detail.

Koh,

The reason I asked about the stat dec was because when I did mine I was in Thailand and went with my gf to the embassy to sort it all out.

Your overall plan was excellent and the more you have to prove your relationship the better chance you have to suceed. When we got ours, they looked at the paperwork and then asked each of us questions in Thai (for gf) and english (for me). Compared the answers. Once they were satisfied that everything was above board they gave us the visa on the spot. I think I said before that the whole process took us 40mins and we walked out with a 3 month tourist visa. Again, just my experience.

yes true.... im sure lots of people have been knocked back for different reasons and lots have been accepted for different reaons...

Can anyone suggest any other sort of protocol they use to accept or decline applicants in BKK?

It really seems to be a hit and miss sort of thing, and a lot depends on the mood of the interviewer, and whether there is something they can seize on to reject the applicant. The Thai staff at the Australian Embassy generally treat Thai applicants badly. An exercise in muscle flexing.

Thats true... however i think if you have every document, and answer they will ask for, then when they go to ask any questions, then you can show them more. I think that maybe the easier it is for staff to process it the more happy they will be to give it to you... I.E. less crap to sort through less trouble....

If you think about how you would react in that kind of job... just imagine the amount of crap you would have to sort through each day.. Im sure i would be more then happy to give someone a visa who had their stuff organised. No fuss. no problems.. next please..

There are some bitches there dont worry about that.

Just because you were lucky and got yours for GF, I can tell you about lots of bad experiences from others, all well dressed, correct paperwork etc.

I said b4 one guys wife had been given 9 visas in 10 years and was refused for the 10th, this wasnt a young couple, it was a well dressed middle aged couple and they were doing their normal Xmas holiday in Oz to visit rellies.

Sure you see some weird types in there and frankly you wonder what they are out to achieve.

The situation may have eased somewhat with a new chief immigration officer but i reckon there are more tales of woe than good ones in the last few years anyway.

You dont work there do you Koh?

regards

have spent a bit of time there myself and is allways interesting to see reactions of people.

Back to the staff there, if you remember the way the embassy was before it was renovated, you had to walk past the consular section to get to the counters.

One day I was there, this guy came in and asked about woman at counter #1 for some information about getting married. The woman there barely acknowledged him and just said consular section, the guy proceeded to walk out of the building, she could have said "yes back down the hall 10 metres, on the right a set of glass doors, go in there" but the bitch just watched him walk away. I yelled out to him and showed him where, she gave me a dirty look.

That's another example of the helpfull local staff.

yes the aus embassy employees are supercilious and arrogant.

I hate the way thais look down on thais .

If your gf is a bargirl they will be hard on her.

I tried last year to get a girl who I had known for a year into au.

I have good job could have paid the bond if requested.

The young educated thai interviewer was about as sensitive as an interogating police officer.

The embassy wanted at least 6 mths phone and email records the usual stat dec and of course their fee.

In the end they refused but wld not say why.

Aust is really tough due to a sex slavery case in melbourne and the recent gruesome murder of two thai working gals in Darwn.

As I said in a previous post I would love to see the stats for each nationalitys overstaying visas in au.

I reckon it aint thais that are the problem

Its ignorant prejudice from the uptight cardy and sandal and sock wearing wowser brigade.

On the other side if you are succesful remember its only a dream for these girls that their life will be better outside of thailand.

The reality is they miss the food, the ability to go out all hours and eat, their friends and their families.

You need a strong smart girl to be able to deal with this.

My current GF is thai and has been here 7 years, she goes to thainatown every second day, spends heaps on thai videos and socialises almost exclusivley with thai friends if you are succesful and she needs a friend let me know.

Interestingly, the number one offenders are the Brits. They probably think that they still own the joint.
