Popular Post luckizuchinni
I went to a local yakiniku this evening that I've been wanting to try with my wife and her niece. They had two choices, the pork and chicken option for 239 baht and the beef added option for 279 baht. Neither my wife nor niece eat beef, so we asked for two of the pork options and one beef. They said no can do. It was all or nothing. Any one table has to order the same thing. I can see the logic in back of this, what with people paying for the pork and then scarfing down the beef that one person in the party ordered. However, there were a total of three tables filled and more staff than customers. We asked if there was any way we could order it the way we wanted, but they said no, their rules would not allow it. So I moved to the adjoining table, ordered the beef option, and had my own charcoal set-up, my own drink cart, my own ice, etc. One foot away was the other table with my wife and her niece. One waiter said he would still have to charge all three of us the 279 baht until I reminded him that according to his own words, if we were at different tables, we wouldn't have to order the same thing. This is no big deal, and we got what we wanted. I just thought it was pretty funny that the rules were so stringent. The restaurant spent more money in charcoal and ice that if we had just sat at the same table, but I guess no one has the authority to use common sense in a case like this.
Jingthing
Funny story. I'm still surprised they couldn't manage to charge you all the same even with the different tables though.
whybother
Funny story. I'm still surprised they couldn't manage to charge you all the same even with the different tables though. It's easier to monitor who is eating beef when they're at separate tables.

Popular Post luckizuchinni
Sitting at a different table to save 80 baht. Not even that. He probably had to pay for his own ice. Nope, ice was free. And sure, I only saved 80 baht. I'm not in the habit of throwing away money whether the amount is large or small. I rather liked having my own brazier and ice as I don't like everything my wife puts on the grill (more of an issue with a moo ga ta than a yakiniku). WIth my wife on the table literally a foot to the side of me, we still had our normal conversations. I'm am not posting to complain as I liked how it turned out; I just thought it was rather funny. With two waiters sitting at the table across from us while waiting for us to ask for something else (there was no one else in our section for them to wait on), I would have thought they could "monitor" us to make sure my wife didn't eat any beef. But as the title of this thread observed, rules are rules.
thailandbeachisland
You should not eat beef also and stop making problems :-)
A1Str8
People at the same table have to eat the same. What an awesome restaurant. I am sure the owner has a degree in 'how to make a business fail'.
whybother
People at the same table have to eat the same. What an awesome restaurant. I am sure the owner has a degree in 'how to make a business fail'. It's a buffet with an extra beef option. If one person has the extra option, everyone at the table has to have the extra option. This would be because, particularly when its busy, there is no way to tell who is really eating the beef. Sent from my phone ...

Popular Post bonobo
Dear Lord is there nothing so small that we won't complain about it? I don't think the OP was complaining. He specified that he was happy with how things turned out. I believe he was just offering a somewhat light-hearted observation of life in Thailand, one I found mildly amusing. The image of three people enjoying a meal on two different tables while two waiters sat across from them to wait on them hand and foot is something that makes me smile and seems pretty "Thai," if I can put it like that. Just one of the reasons I love it here.
jacko45k
Pah... the world is full of funny rules. A place in Poland wouldn't serve us until we took our coats off.... it was bloody freezing. McD freaks out if you order something they don't have a button for. The customer is always right does not apply here...... Edited January 1, 2014 by jacko45k

steve down under
In my opinion so long as the Beef is paid for it does'nt really matter who the <deleted> eats it ,Imagine if that was a restuarant in Aussie or elsewhere and you had a T bone and your partner had a small piece as a taster and ended up getting charged for a whole T Bone wouldnt you have something to say ? . Rather an amusing experience, and possible way to work around it. I don't see the angle of him trying to save money as someone pointed out, but rather how to get what he desired for his meal. Finding it quite amusing, on how the staff stood their ground, and how he quietly figured out a way to turn the situation around... Thanks for sharing the story Luckizuchinni.

wolfmanjack
there is a place down the road from me that charges us extra if we want 2 coal cookers instead of 1 for 4 people even though I tried to explain to them that if the 4 of us would have came in separately they would have gladly supplied 4 cookers without any extra charge. If i go there again I will do the same that the OP did. My son and I will sit at one table while my daughter and wife sit at another 1 foot away.

edwinchester
In the U.S.having a "beef" with the waitstaff is a good way to insure your food will be given a little "extra attention" in the back of the house before it arrives at your table. Wonder if that happens here? Wifey used to work in a restaurant years ago. If a customer acted up they definitely got some of 'chefs own sauce' if the opportunity arose. Gsxrnz
Had a similar thing in Central with a "buy 2 t-shirts, get one free deal". I wanted to buy 4 t-shirts and expected to get 2 free ones. No can do, only one free per customer. So I bought 2 and got one free, and so did the wife. I've never come across this before and suspect the sales assistant was either new, or just plain stupid.
slipperylobster
It was even more surprising that they did not charge for two buckets of ice. I do not even use ice in my drinks (especially beer), but some restaurants include a charge for the ice! It is listed on the menu with the drinks. I asked several times for the ice to be taken back, but was ignored. It does become frustrating. I do not mind the 10 baht at all, and would have just included that in the tip. Instead I chose not to leave a tip at all. That, for me, is saving face. I am guilty of standing up and carrying the unwanted ice back to the cashier, and having them remove it from the bill. It was very embarrassing and I regret it.
somchaismith
I think the restaurant sounds retentive. They should have given you the beef for the pork price. How was the beef anyway?
