Yes. And the interrupting person also has no idea that they are being rude in doing so. I just put it down to their "culture", whatever that is.

Normally this is our cat, so i let it pass :)

Often in my family group everyone is speaking at the same time. As for your wife to listen to English is probably harder so

she chooses the easy way out but it is not intentionally rude by either party. I can understand your frustration however

I was just driving back from the market. There were 5 adult thais, 2 children and myself. There was at least 3 conversations going on most of the time. I was not part of it. As usual the volume level was quite high, but no one was deaf. They were all interrupting each other, - jIt's the culture, yes annoying but not rude to them.

Yes!

But they all get quiet when my 5 year old daughter interrupts me and I tell her that she is only half Thai and is not required to be rude and interrupt people who are already talking.

"Wait until there is a break in the conversation then ask your question."

Suddenly there is a break in the conversation..they all shut up!

Drove 4 Vietnemese women to the airport last night; they would give the Thai's a run for their money with load multiple conversations. They got the hint when I cranked up some George Thorogood on my 800 watt car system.

She doesn't have too many people to interrupt her in the kitchen....................rolleyes.gif

Of course, it could be as simple as the OP's girlfriend not being that interested in what he has to say and welcoming the interruption.

I try to keep her mouth full.....less talking

Yes because only Thai women get bored listening to your ceaseless twaddle so it must be a Thai cultural thing for a wife/girlfriend to tune out boring husbands/boyfriends and grasp at anything to get a break.

No she doesn't .. Yes she is Thai .... rolleyes.gif Have you dicussed this with her ......coffee1.gif

To the OP:

Why don't you nudge her the next time she does that?

She will loose face and never do that again to you.smile.png

As I have said many times, "Thai people are friendly but not polite."

Grow a pair or dont be so insecure.

Nuff said

PS Thai has nothing to do with this. I see guys with US girlfriends with the same grips. My answer to them is the same also.

You are the wallet and the sperm donor; don't get in their way. Speaking from 30 odd years of experience in a Thai family.

Go and get a life, if you can't even handle your wife's gf's behavior. Ever thought that you might do something that's annoying her/them?-wai2.gif

this is something Thai do all the time...put it down to ignrance...or just plain thick

I notice that Thai's will often interrupt people speaking English.

But then I often see exactly the same thing with Farangs interrupting Thais...

My theory is that both (at least unconsciously) don't see the other as "actually speaking".

It's just a background noise that you have to speak over (loudly).

I always say

'So you not want that 10,000 baht, okay'...and move away.

It is very common with Thai people. but Mrs Possum never does that with me. It has happened to me a few times in stores, I am speaking to an assistant and then someone else butts in, then the assistant ignores me and attends to them. I never allow it. I tell the person to beat it as the assistant is busy with me.

You cranked up who?

It's the difference between listening in a "real" or a foreign language. Real languages have priority over foreign languages.

I had the same problem with Thais and the Australian Aboriginal people until it was explained during a cultural awareness course in Darwin, that while westerners speak didactically, they speak communally - they appear to be speaking above you but in fact they are listening while also communicating with others.

It is frustrating at times but I've learned to cope with it. I had the experience of watching two politicians lose their temper during a meeting on the Tiwi Islands north of Darwin because they thought their brand of 'intellectual discourse' was being ignored and "...we didn't come all this way [100km by air] while you people keep on talking..." Needless to say everyone stood up and turned their backs to them. Sound familiar?

So, just grin and bear it - they are listening and aren't deliberately butting in or ignoring you.

They can do it but if you discuss it they will stop.
