Just out of interest, does anyone know if my legal Thai Wife can get an aussie passport without living there?

I do not want to live in Australia, but I will be wanting to visit every couple of years to see the aussie family, and of course my daughter will want to meet the rest of the family too. Of course I can get her a passport no problems through descent, but it would just be so much easier if my little wife can have two passports.

We would probably visit my aussie family a whole lot more often if it was easier, but having to apply for a visa for her each time just isn't worth it, my family can come to LoS and visit us :o

any thoughts anyone?

check out www.immi.gov.au

Unfortunately, it looks like your wife will only be able to get an Aussie passport after being IN australia as a Permanent Resident for a total of 2 years.

You may want to look at getting some sort of spouse PR visa (as opposed to tourist visa) for your wife, which establishes PR in OZ. This given (obviously) to people with the intention to move back. However if your wife "comes and goes" so to speak (mainly goes...to Thailand) any time in OZ spent on this visa should count towards to 2 years.

However, check the website, I may be wrong. It may be harder now for people to be "Permanent Residents" in name only, but not in actuality.

As ever dear Samran, you got it right. That last year of the last year of the final two years is crucial. Every day spent away from Australia is added on to that last year.

Hhmmmm, I guess the question now is...is going this far, and then to have the customs hassle worth going back at all?

I think invitations for my aussie family to visit LoS is the way to go at this point.

I will definately get my baby an aussie passport, for her sake.

It just sounds too hard, when living in LoS is too easy :o:D

haha, as they say, no pain, no gain!! A fully invasive body search every now and then shouldn't be a problem for tough aussie blokes!! (just joking). Coming back with family and bubsy will ensure VIP treatment at customs and immigration.

Anyhoo, many of my Thai mates with Australian PR spend their time mainly in Thailand, but "rack up" their time in australia on nice long holidays.

As Dr PP wisely pointed out, in the last year of the 2 year residency requirement, you have to be there for a certain amount of time, which means that if you want the PP for her, you will need to consider temporily moving back to OZ. And hey, your daughter will come away from it speaking real Aussie English too, setting her up for a great life in LOS.

that last year is crucial to eligibility for citizenship Samran

How is ANU and the wilds of Canberra ? Sorry we didn't get to make that shandy before you fled.

And sadly, HM Customs in Oz no longer conduct cavity searches. If one is deemed necessary the punter is hauled off to a hospital and a doctor attends to the niceties.

Starting school in 18 years from now Tuky... a slow learning rugrat or is he/she still in liquid form ? :o The guy that previously ran Hellfire pass is married to a Vietnamese lady. The then Minister was prevailed on to grant her Oz citizenship without the residential qualification. He had the excuse that he worked for the Australian War Graves Commission abroad, and he had the strength of the Oz Embassy behind him. The Minister has the power, but whether she can be persuaded to do it ( the charming Senator Vanstone ....how would you like to be the hubby ? ) It is worth asking the Immigration heavies at the Embassy. Good luck mate.

Unless tuky has some pretty good contacts I can't see the embassy doing too much. If you can manage to talk with Wilson Johnson tuky it might be helpfull.

With the present attitudes to immigration in Oz, if the story ever got out about getting the residential requirement being waved and citizenship granted, well !!!!

Vandslob is stupid, but to get involved, after what ruddock just went thru, even she isn't that stupid.

When Kevin takes over things will improve. :o

In all fairness now Bronco, I cannot argue with that cogent reasoning. And pretty Amanda ain't. :o

I reckon when vanderslob loses her seat this next election she could get a job with Keating, at his pig farm, as a sow. :D

I think that she has the required attributes. Would PJ Keating put her on ( so to speak ) ? :o
