Suthep's plea for military help to protect protesters

BANGKOK: -- Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban Sunday night pleaded with the military top brass to send troops to provide protection for the protesters against possible attacks from ill-intent elements.

He made the plea for military help repeatedly in his address to protesters at Pathumwan protest stage in the aftermath of a violent incident during the day when assailants believed to be red-shirt thugs attacked a convoy of protesters on their way back from shutting down a polling unit at Wat Sri-ngiam in Bang Na. One protester was killed and ten others injured, mostly by gunshots.

Mr Suthep said he could not trust the policemen and would like commanders of the three armed forces to arrange troops to be stationed at protest sites to protect protesters.

He said that he didn’t understand why police who were stationed at the temple which is not far from the scene of the broad daylight attack did nothing to stop the violence. He added that he suspected the assailants might be foreigners or thugs controlled by some bad cops.

He maintained that the plea for military help was came from the “great mass of people” and that it was not meant for the military to stage a coup.

Suthep wore a bullet-proof vest that he said was made by a reporter friend for his protection against suspected assassination attempt on his life. He however said he would wear it for just one night after which the vest would be put on auction and the proceeds from the auction would go to food expenses to feed the protesters.

Lets see here, Suthep asking for protection of his mob while they are in the process of closing down, blocking of polling stations and harassing people who wish to vote.

There is a word for that that begins with a "C".

CRETIN?

It is astonishing to see the lack of police control and the police unwillingness to do their duty. How can anyone or any company/business feel secure in Thailand?

If the police starts doing their duty, they will first of all arrest this little faci.

It can be assumed that Suthep and his dreaming brigades will do the same on the 2nd Feb. the result will be a nullified election, with a postponement of the election. Again the caretaker government will stay ( or better has to stay). It's time to call the party off and sit together and find compromises where both sides are not losing face.

True but the unfortunate thing is that any thing less than what Suthep is demandcing is to leave things as they are.

Sure maybe the election will be put off and the Dems enter and win it but unless the checks and balances are put into the government it will solve nothing just prolong the corruption for years.

People will forget how bad the PTP were just like they have forgotten how bad the red shirts were. Then it will be the same same next election one man and his money buying the election and the men who win it.

Thailand needs to change now to prevent the continuance of a way of governing that comes close to allowing a dictatorship to be set up in the name of democracy just as Hitler did.

Btw Hitler was not elected he was appointed. I understand what you are saying but would it not be fair to both sides if the Anti Government Protesters would clearly say what they want except taken the shins out of the Governement. That is not a program. What they want to do with the millions of Thais in the North which may be will vote back a Shin in power? Reduce voting rights? Nothing is clear and transparent and as long as their is no transparency than the future will be the same as past, with other people on the top. Vote buying like you said is not really the issue if you even read the comments of the Democratic Party spokesman. It is the long time that all governments had neglected the rural areas. Without addressing their problems no party will win and until now I did not see any program from the democrats or the Suthep Gang which is doing that.

The mob's ringleader is asking for the Army to help him stop democracy in the name of democracy??? Nothing like Thai logic to motivate the military. Many in the West would shoot too if someone was using force to stop them from voting. I'm surprise more of the anti-democratic mob hasn't been gunned down.

The amount of businesses that are closed or "on Hold" is huge. Many multinationals like myself are out of Thailand currently doing more productive things. Many westerners I know are taking this time to visit other countries etc. Even any Thai that can afford to fly have left Thailand for the time being. The damage thats been done has has been done and the cleanup and rebuilding will take years.

so we have EC officials under threat of prosecution by the DSI and yet the police refuse to protect them, why should these people risk their lives, that Tarit is a piece of work

and I do not agree with the protestors move to block election sites even though at this point the election should have been abandoned as it's a farce
