Northeast farmers threaten to blockade Friendship Highway today

BANGKOK: -- Rice farmers from 20 northeastern provinces are gathering at Lamtakong dam in Si Kiew district of Nakhon Ratchasima today in their threat to blockade the Friendship Highway today if the caretaker government could not pay them today.

At the same time rice farmers from the central provinces also threatened to completely blockade the Asian Highway if the government could not assure them that they would get money at the end of this month.

“All rice farmers from the central region will join force to blockade the highway completely if we’re not yet paid by January 31,” said the Network for the Central Region Farmers Winai Lamsing this morning.

He said farmers no longer have trust in this government but when it assured fathers again that all farmers would be paid by the end of this month, they agreed to wait.

He cautioned that if this final promise was betrayed again, all farmers from the central region would join force to blockade the highway completely both

He asked for sympathy from the people who has to travel on the highway to turn to other routes as farmers were in real trouble because the majority of farmers have no other revenues but from rice sales.

Some have not been paid for nine months, he said, while they still have to spend to lead their normal life.

Meanwhile farmers from 20 northeastern provinces are gathering at Lamtakong dam in Si Kiew but have not yet blockade the highway.

They wanted assurance of their payment from the government by today, their leader said.

They also said that most farmers in the region are supporters of the government but if they were not paid, they also wound join anti-government protests in the capital.

At present farmers are blocking the road from Lampraimas to Huey Thalaeng province and are to intensify protest if they are not paid by end of the month.

If its a threat and they haven't done it yet, why is the article accompanied by a picture of a blocked road? At least put a caption under it explaining what it is.

It's just like Thai TV, when the picture says "Live" but its file footage and not always even at the same place they are talking from/about.

You seem to have missed 'armed with intent' from your sentence containing red shirts

Yes they will be happy to be part of the PTP landslide victory .... probably their votes already counted.

I'm sure that ways of highjacking the election are being investigated....PTP will be trying everything they can to avoid a defeat.....

Farmers who do not agree to using streets protest, know the sabotaging activities of the rice scheme and that EC had blocked their payments on an ongoing scheme.

The EC and PCAD must have access to time traveling technology since the farmers haven't been paid for 9 months.

Please, stop treating the farmers as if they are idiots.

Teach an inefficient farmer how to grow rice more efficiently and he will struggle to make a decent income.

Teach an inefficient farmer to depend on a subsidy and you have bought his vote forever. At least until the money runs out.

Excuse me Sir. Who is the ones trying to hijack the election by preventing the voting by the average Somchai??

The answer to that is: PAD, the ultranationalist rightwing party, under the leadership of the neo-faci Suthep!

And sure, the "peoples council" appointed by the elite, is going to care a lot about the rural farmers. NOT

Fact of the matter is that the EC is NOW blocking the payments. Regardless of who is right or wrong, good or bad, the farmers must be paid. I wish the powers that are / that want to be / to be will stop playing games and pay the farmers their dues.

Please read careful. The issue is not whether farmers haven't been paid for 9 months or not. It is the perception and the opinion of the farmers who do not believe streets protest and road block will solve their problems on a scheme that they believed was facing sabotaging and now when all mechanism is ready to pay them, EC block a payment that is an ongoing payments which are late. What if there is no late payment? Ongoing payment on an ongoing scheme should still be made. EC has abused their power and guilty of conflict of interest.

Have you study the existence, background and the ongoing progressive development of the rice farming and related industries?

At the same time rice farmers from the central provinces also threatened to completely blockade the Asian Highway

That will bring things to a screeching halt nation-wide.

post-198911-0-67187100-1390800143_thumb.

It's certainly a do-able blockade as all legs of the Asian Highway pass through the central Thailand.

Good luck with this one, Yingluck.

Best to come up with some cash...and FAST.

I believe the EC said making the payment now is "illegal"

The Govt is already threatening the EC with criminal charges .... why is the Govt letting criminals block them ?

So .... what's stopping the Govt if they think it's right ?

One big reason is because they ain't got the money.

has there ever been such a cluster-f__k of a Thai Govt before?

The farmers know precisely who has been sabotaging the rice pledging scheme, and blocking the payments. They talk about it openly and name names.

The yellows must kill the rice pledging scheme if they are to erode the red's voter base.

Yingluck cannot finalize the credit for the farmers payment's, not because there isn't enough money, and not because Thailand is bankrupt, but rather because she dare not risk jeopardizing the next PTP government should her party win ... that is even if there is an election. If she finalizes the credits now and goes on to form the next government the EC and CC will cry foul and tear the new government to shreds. The farmers know this well. They also know what ANFO is,and how to make efficient use of it.

Think of the farmers. They have worked so very hard from harvest to harvest, They know who is preventing them from being paid and who has been and continues to sabotage the scheme.

There was no money to pay the farmers before the EC had any say on this. If you love the farmers so very much please do stop trying to fool them with lies, it's not polite.
