My thai wife has had a usa greencard for 1.5 years... her mother ( Thai national ) would like to visit us here in the usa on a tourist visa. My wife and son are going to Bangkok in April and are hoping to attend her mothers interview for the visa. I'm wondering if this is allowed. Thanks for any suggestions!

In a word, "no."

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/niv_howtoapply.html

"Please note that only individuals applying for a visa are allowed to enter the Embassy. Visa applicants may not bring family members, colleagues, or friends with them, even if those individuals are American citizens. During the interview process, each applicant must present his or her case individually. Applicants should be prepared to talk about their ties and their travel plans without assistance from other family members or legal representation. The only applicants who may be accompanied are children under the age of 16 and applicants with disabilities, who may be accompanied under certain circumstances."

If your wife goes to the embassy with your mother in law, she should be prepared to go some place and wait for a couple of Hours.

I went there with my then Fiance (it's being many years now) and I had to wait outside across the street in the heat, there was nothing with in walking distance then, maybe now there is. But she will certainly not allowed to go in with her Mom.

They'll quiz her to try and prove she want's to move to the USA.

As if that is not bad it gets worse when she gets to JFK.
