Govt calls on Election Commission to hold new polls within one week

cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif I just found out, that a lot of reds, in my area, have voted "None of the above" or didn't go to vote at all, because PT would not pay out money this time. Thai democracy in action, lol.

"i have just found out" Hahaha. Course you have! Stop making up story's. Even if it were true,(which it isn't), as if 'Lots of Reds" would tell you!Haha. Lets face it, you are just peed off because the vast majority of Thais gave the finger to your anti democrat hero Suthep, and exercised their democratic right to vote. Something which obviously goes against the grain with you too. In your home country is the democratic right to vote taken as read? What do you think would happen in any Western country if a few minority protestors tried to physically stop citizens from voting? They would be dealt with very quickly and harshly by the powers that be, and locked up. Quite rightly too.

Surely only the terminally naive on here believe that these protests are about ensuring reforms. If that were the case why didn't Suthep initiate reforms when he was in government, and had the power to do so? This is nothing more than a naked grab for power by a tiny but very powerful and influential elite, based in Bangkok. They know they will never win any election, which is why they have gone to such extreme and violent measures to prevent elections taking place. Does anyone really believe that if Suthep and his backers get their way, and install a 'Peoples council', comprising of a few hundred self appointed, self serving, non elected like minded 'Elite', who will then rule over the rest of the 60 odd million, will just give that up and hold 'free and fair' elections, knowing that the result would be their annihilation at the ballot box? Of course they wouldn't. Once they have stripped away the basic right of one person - one vote, the people will never get it back without a fight. I find it quite shocking that there are Farangs on here who come from countries where the right to vote is taken for granted, yet are openly supporting a demagogue who would take away this basic right from the Thai people. If they expressed support on a public forum in their home country for the overthrow of an elected Government, supporting the taking away of democratic rights, etc etc, they would be getting a knock on the door in the middle of the night!

Same issues in Amnat, I predict the total votes for taksin will be down and what votes were bought went for 400 each plus 1200 for heads of families..

Looks like Suthep and his lackeys failed to stop democracy!

Democracy???? You can only vote for the government or Chuvit at this election....Welcome in the democracy East Germany style.

As you well know there are multiple parties registered for this election. There is even an option for a "No" vote so stop spreading misinformation

Really? In all constituencies?

Methinks you are wrong

And Chuwit's party is standing in all constituencies?

Really?

Methinks your argument is befuddled.

If they cancel the result there will be hell to pay, .. the country has voted and those that havnt will. The courts cannot keep nullifying things over and over people just wont accept it.

If the country has chosen then so be it, a few thousand rabid people dosnt make an opposition, go back and come up with real policies and party to oppose or go crawl under a rock smile.png

Well the opposition had almost as much votes (in the popular vote) as the PTP in the last election and dominate all teh south....

That are more than a few thousands.

We are talking about the rallies. You can't assume that every person who didn't vote PT in the south supports Suthep's grab for power.

I don't know, why all of you fellow foreigners get so excited about this "failed" election? Most Thai people just don't care anymore. Others are down partying to great music in Bangkok and eating good free food.

There are a few fanatics of course, but you get those everywhere.

This is so funny...a Thai woman came into the bar tonight and told us about the Pro-Yingluck stage in Chiang Dao, last night. She said, there were only about three people there. Most people didn't even know about it. (We didn't and none of our friends, all who have businesses less than two blocks away from it, on main street, knew about it, either)

By contrast, Bangkok people are flooding the streets every night, listening to popular singers like Pong Phat, Eet and others.

As a foreigner, if you haven't been here, for very long, you need to understand that Thai people value sanuk (fun), more than anything in life. For example, if are an employer, you better make sure, the job is in a fun environment, because they will not stay for high pay, if the place is no fun. Suthep knows how to get to the people...good, free food and lots of fun entertainment.

Nobody really trusts or likes politicians anymore, just like anywhere else in the world. They want to have fun and eat together.

You guys are taking this whole thing way to seriously. wai2.gif

You're being very patronising. Perhaps politics means little to people who are already so well off that they can spend time going to bars. But it means a whole lot to poor villagers who don't even have a pump to supply drinking water. Thaksin brought those kind of benefits to remote communities.

The bad news for the Sutheps of this world and for yourself is that all those people in rural areas and in surrounding towns and cities have a vote.

By the way, I don't think 'flooding the streets' is right; it was reported that there were about 1000 people at insurrectionist Suthep's events in Bangkok last week, and BlueSky TV rarely shows the audience for the speeches - probably because the number of spectators is so insignificant.

Sorry if I reply with insufficient levity.

Out of 94,454 polling stations in 375 constituencies, he said election proceeded smoothly in 84,325 stations, representing 89.28 per cent.

Looks like Mr. Sutheps 'total shutdown' has failed dismally - largely because he forgot that Thailand consists of more than central Bangkok and Surat Thani. Time he was put oput to grass.

Sadly, of course, this is not the end, because the hopelessly biased judiciary will now be wheeled into play and will throw out the elected government, thus starting the whole merry-go-round again. Violent Red democ in BKK in 3 years time?

It hasn't failed yet. The election results can't be declared. Government can't be formed until enough seats can be filled. It will be 2-3 months at least before parliament can be convened to elect a PM and form a government.

The Thai Constitution states, that the Elections have to be held in one day (not counting advance polls of course). You cannot have an "advance poll", after the main election, so this election is in fact invalid and will be annulled, which it should be in any Country. You also have to have a quorum, in order to form a Government and they don't. wai2.gif

Did you see that on TV? Let's leave the constitutional stuff to those that have a clue. It's perfectly valid to hold by-elections after the event to fill empty seats. Unless the CC overturns today, it's valid.

So, the question will be, will they hold another voting day for those that didn't get a chance to vote in advanced or normal voting, or will they hold a by-election in all constituencies that had voting issues?

If "elections have to be held in one day" then it seems like they will need to hold by-elections.

I think the EC are planning to ask the courts for a ruling.

You are correct about the numbers. I was in Asoke and Rama 1 several times last week and there were very few, in the low hundreds 100-200. I stood in the crowd at Asoke for Suthep's major rant on Friday evening and there were 1500 max (I have photos) with about a 3rd being tourists. Today Suthep was at Lumpini and I was saw a couple of hundred, mostly guards.

What happened to the massive paralysis of Bangkok he promised for today? He promised that all the roads would be shut down by picnics or something equally silly. Absolutely nobody - none, zero - turned up outside a 100k so max in Chitlom, and many of those were just there for the party. The streets elsewhere were quiet and it was a beautiful bangkok day.

That he's pulled back from 3 major sites says it all.

And what democracy was that

One person, one vote by a legal citizen of Thailand. I don't expect any pro-Democrat at this point in time to understand such as basic right in a democratic society.

For those who can not seem to find it in themselves to admit the truth, NO, it is not over. Suthep and friends are not going to be arrested and thrown under the jail, as we all know, TIT, amazing Thialand. The best is yet to come. When the probes into the rice scandal get going, hit-the-fan.gif it will truly hit the fan. Even if Yingluck does get enough votes to stay in office, there will be several other oppertunities to force her out. Suthep and friends are not going to just call it quits and go fishing, no this will only serve to strengthen their resolve. Things might really start to smell now. I just hope that many families do not lose members.

I for one admire Suthep, even though we all know he is not squiky clean, has had the gonads to pursue this. If we had someone like him in the USA to unite us against the government, hell, I would pack up and move back in a heartbeat.

This is only the start of a long journey that Thailand is going to be traveling in the comming years.

It is certainly not over - as you rightly suggest. But I think it will pan out differently. Suthep is now soiled goods in the eyes of his elite backers,.

They have invested, and probably now lost, a lot of money supporting this man and he has failed dismally to deliver. They will not be a happy bunch. When the Yellow Shirts failed in a previous incarnation their leader, Sondhi, was the subject of an assassination attempt. He somehow miraculously survived, and said he knew who was behind his attempted murder but refused to name names. What fate now awaits, Suthep? An unpleasant one I imagine, forever looking over his shoulder from now on. He's a finished man. And his financial backers will be looking for a new frontman.

Did any one see it on the news today where Yingluck voted but it was so complicated that she did it wrong and her vote won't count. So what we have here is a PM who can't figure out how to cast a ballot. Then their is a capable honest man (Abhist) who can not run for office because he did not vote. Truly amazing Thailand. Then you top it off with the fact that she is bound to be the PM but she has some of her supporters talking about splitting the Nation. Yes sirebob truly amazing.cheesy.gif

But she did get some photo ops in. That was the important thing in her way of operating and running the country. She actually was pathetic just standing there with the vote in her hand and staring off into cameras with out letting go of it.giggle.gif

People dribble on about democracy being the right to vote but none of these PTP red shirt dribblers mention Democracy being the right to have an honest transparent government.

No, the dozens of allegations only need to be heard once, if at all. It simply becomes a little like a class action which the court has to agree to hear. The primary questions have already been dealt with behind the scenes. Banks of lawyers have been dealing with this for weeks now. The Dem's have zero chance of overturning this now, and neither does Suthep. It will be interesting to see if the EC send this to the CC but I've yet to see any indication that they intend to. The PDRC are being willfully optimistic here but it's hard to see what grounds they may have.

All Suthep can do now is to block a diminishing minority number of polls where Democrat candidates would otherwise have taken a majority of votes. All he can do now is watch Blue Sky tv and see the growing PTP avalanche. If he thought the first PTP administration was difficult, now it will feel more embolden resist his schemes.

Suthep ends up miserably.

But anger will drive revenge.

Suthep, his extremist followers, and too many irrational farangs posting on here must be really upset that the election could mostly go without problem.

In a week everyone will have voted.

Whatever the result is, the fact that elections could take place is a great victory for the defenders of democracy.

I really wish that Suthep, the Dems and all their crazy followers will be punished for all the useless turmoil they created.

The balance of your response seems largely irrelevant.

And what democracy was that

Its too difficult to explain. Get your mom to tell you when your 15.

Maybe the 6 million man picnic that brought bangkok to it's knees should be extended. lol

Suthep is doomed now. Police have all the evidence and warrents and they'll strike as the mob falls in size. They have the facebook group pics now of the guards with the guns. The PDRC are that blatant.

Power to the people and well done to everybody who voted. I was in klong toey with my wife today and not a whistle to be seen. all that area was free to vote, and many did. The fascist had a few phyric victories. I mean, they had promised to block the whole thing and even with the EC conniving and an armed gang, they could only affect 10% of the Country!

Great day out Suthep. After unleashing the armed gang yesterday, I feel we'll be seeing much less of you in years to come. The backers. They are outed as well, and once the mob is gone, they will have to switch sides or perish.

Well done to the Government, The election was peaceful apart from Dem/PDRC side who want dictatorship anyway.

Why don't EC, give all the votes in the South to Suthep to cast as he wishes for all time. One man, one vote and he can just tell them where they go. Then the muppets in the south get an instant awakening to the fact that Suthep rules them. Educate... You think so? Give hard fought voting rights to Suthep... smile.png up to you

WOW truely amazing that you are happy to have Thailand run by a convicted felon living abroad who should be charged with crimes against humanity

No, what's amazing is that no other political party in Thailand can put forward a candidate with integrity and decency to run against Thaksin's corrupt political machine in an honest and fair election. That fact is really saying about the state of affairs in Thailand, and the reason that Suthep and his backers want to take away the Thai's right to vote for a government of their choice.

What a joke. A sick joke, but a joke. You call that successful elections? The will be annulled within a month and everyone knows it, except for a few wishful thinkers. rolleyes.gif

And who will invalidate the elections? The EC will not as it was a participant and responsible for the electorial process. It would make itself a fool (albeit given a history) to challenge what it has supported. I am sure Suthep will file a challenge with the Court to invalidate the election but with what standing? He and his Democrats were not even on the ballot so he has not suffered any harm by the conduct of the election. Remember he wanted people NOT to vote.

..............what for?.....................................standing up to a criminal? You can always go back home!! You dont have a say by the way!!

The Thai people have gone out in their millions to vote today. They've gone not knowing how much harassment, intimidation and violence they would face. They have broken down gates locked by the anti-democrat supporters

The message that you and your Suthep thugs need to understand is that ordinary Thai people will not have their basic human rights trampled over. They have spoken

I had a friend take his wife to vote in Bangkok today. No protesters, but the polling place was empty. Nobody was voting.

As reported by the Post a few days ago, a majority of the people in Bangkok favored a delay in the polls. Democracy isn't just about voting. There's a lot more to it.

One of my friend bring all family at Picnic Day (sigh), all my wife relatives went to vote in Bangkok (and some of them failed because the booth was closed due to not distributed ballots).

Bangkok is not all Thailand. Phuket is not all Thailand, Nakhon Si Thammarat is not all Thailand.

The majority of country had the chance to exercise their right to vote. FACT

That majority of people in Bangkok favored a delay in the polls is just your idea or speculation, not a fact. A poll (especially Thai polls) can give an idea of the situation, but not the unequivocal truth.

Let's stick to facts, please.

You really were not paying attention were you. This whole thing is not a product of Suthep and these mysterious they that you allude to. Always have to have a mysterious force makes for a great novel. The plain and simple truth is this is a reaction by grass roots people to a in your face we don't give a damn what you want corrupt government. Suthep came along later.

You people are laughable always talking about the elite behind it all ask you to name them and not one name comes up just the normal every body knows. Well I don't so tell me here.

Millions of people have no fear of saying Thaksin is behind the red shirts so why not give us the names behind this grass roots inspired protest.

Reason You haven't a clue.

Nobody is being sued for saying Thaksin is behind the red shirts.

Thaksin was convicted by who ? By an ILLEGAL putschist government who staged a coup against democracy.

Thaksin government was BY FAR the least corrupted government in Thailand.

This is not my study, but Transparency International's.

He was ousted because the billionaire elite of Bangkok couldn't stand to see a pneny spent for the Northeast, where almost all food is produced, where all Thailand eats from (34% of the population just receiving a 6% of expenses, source :World Bank) and ousted also coz his war against the YAA BAA (thus saving the lives of dozens of thousands of Thais) was killing the business of some very powerful men in uniform.

Than, the military controlled judiciary convicted him. The real criminals , the generals who killed thousands of innocent people in 1976, 1992, etc,,,never ever spent a day in jail. These are the real criminals.

THaksin wasn't a saint either, but he was surely better than these people and than guys like Suthep.

The people have spoken. Jail Suthep and his lackeys now!

..............what for?.....................................standing up to a criminal? You can always go back home!! You dont have a say by the way!!

No, to arrest your boss and your hero Suthep, one of the biggest criminal in Thailand, CONVICTED for fraud, murder, violation of the Constitution, etc..

Your hero has a whole life of committing crime

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suthep_Thaugsuban

Did you hero call you to tell word by word all the insults of the day against the forumists ?

We can see here the Suthep's followers the only thing they are capable of is insulting the other forumists.

I must have missed the link to any of the convictions you just summed up .

there are all the sources in his biography.

Everybody knows the criminal Suthep is.

You must have just arrived to Thailand to have missed what he did to the Democratic Party in the 90s and what he had done in Surath Thani .

He was convicted several times. Just check the sources or go and ask Chuan Leekpai or anyone in Surath Thani.

Looks like Suthep and his lackeys failed to stop democracy!

Democracy???? You can only vote for the government or Chuvit at this election....Welcome in the democracy East Germany style.

Not even close to an analogy to communism where one party decides who will be eligible to run in the elections. Obviously Suthep decided he did not want to be in the election and 20 other parties had their own candidates in the elections. The east German government nor the soviet union for that matter ever tried to sell the idea that they operated in a democratic society. Ironcially to your statement, Suthep is attempting to make Thailan'ds democratic society into a communist East germany style society.
