Authorities urged to stringently prevent alcohol sales on Makha Bucha

BANGKOK, 12 February 2014 (NNT) – A network of anti-alcohol groups submitted a letter to the Department of Disease Control director-general on Tuesday to call on authorities to strictly enforce the ban on alcoholic beverage sales on Makha Bucha Day.

Makha Bucha falls on February 14 this year, on the same day as Valentine's Day. The anti-alcohol groups were asking authorities to ban sales of alcohol for the entire 24 hours of February 14. They also asked that officials visit various localities to ensure that shops were complying with the ban, as well as to guard against sale of alcohol to minors. In addition, they asked that provincial public health offices collaborate with revenue officials and the police in this regard.

In the meantime, the Business Forecasting Center of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce revealed that its survey indicated 3 billion baht will be spent on the occasion of Valentines' Day whereas 2.8 billion baht will be spent for Makha Bucha Day activities on February 14. Although both amounts were higher than the previous year's, they were less than the amounts spent in the years before. The center attributed the lackluster spending to higher product prices in the eyes of consumers and the political uncertainty resulting in people spending money more carefully.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Yep won't be able to wine and dine the little woman on Valentines day. Should have this ban every valentines day as it is just a commercial gimmick anyway.thumbsup.gif

If these types of bans are legal and properly enforced ok we have to live with them but there's so much hypocrisy at work and a great excuse for the BIB and local government officials to put the arm on offenders. Cash v Buddhism, no contest.

Most shop owners etc pay up because they balance a bribe to stay open against the loss of a day's takings.

The foreigners I know who have businesses which sell alcohol take no chances and close as they know they will be targeted.

When is someone going to invade Thailand, take it by the scruff of the neck and drag it kicking and screaming into the 21st century?.... Or even the 20th century will do.

Colonization wasn't a bad idea.

These campaigns need to be seen in there true light. Simply yet another justification for the RTP to improve on it's platform of extortion.

Remind me to never enroll my kids at the BFCUTCC - <deleted> are they saying? People will spend more money than last year, but spend less money than 2011 due to poktical unrest?? 'Higher product prices in the eyes of consumers' ??? Prices are either higher or they're not - my eyes don't have any effect...although I wish they did: Sorry nong, in my eyes this steak is only 40 baht.

Colonization wasn't a bad idea.

It didn't do much for our first empire - why do you people have to reinvent the English language? The word is 'colonisation' No zed.

As for the pathetic booze ban. Fortunately as MB day falls on a Friday, everyone will take their loved ones out on Saturday anyway. Don't forget to stock up the wine cellar on Thursday! - a desperate attempt to stop Thais drinking like fish. Doesnt work. Never did. Look at what happened to the colonists in America after we'd reluctantly allowed them their independence, what did they do with it? Prohibition! How well did that work?

"why do you people have to reinvent the English language?" - start by asking them English folks sat on their chairs. Here are some errors from your post, Mr. Policeman:

As for the pathetic booze ban.

Doesnt

Doesnt work.

Never did.

BTW colonisation can be spelt with a Z

Only pussy countries spell colonization with an 's'. Which country or colour do you favour?

In all of this you attempt to give a grammar/spelling lesson? By the way, 'doesn't' has an apostrophe.

555555 touched a nerve there? I must admit I do see a lot of <deleted> grammar on here, regardless of which nationality. Not saying I'm any better, I just wince when I see some of the regular common mistakes, never mind the punctuation. Otherwise, you say potato we say blah blah WGAF?

Basically the alcohol ban on MB day is an expression of religous intolerance. Everybody, whatever their religion or beliefs must follow the Buddhist rules!

Needs to be reminded. coffee1.gif

Whats the problem ? you know its coming, its on the calendar and happens every year .... its no problem getting served alcohol in tons of places if you know where to go, failing that have a night off itll do your liver good and have an early night, the gf/wife will thank you for being attentive for more than the usual 2 mins for a change.

A futile exercise since drinking alcohol is not prohibitted. They sgould just ask that Bhuddists refrain from drinking - those that are serious about their religion won't and the rest will do as they please.

EDIT due to big fingers, small phone keybosrd spelling syndrome

Are they for real?

First they close the bars for 2 weekends for a Micky Mouse election that won't stand.

Now they make a Valentines display on Pattaya beach...but don't allow alcohol sales...

Still, not much longer. They will scare away all the tourists and business people.

Somchai can go back to growing rice and Lek can go back to getting 1000 baht long time in the Go Go....

Happy days will be here again.

I've seen monks enjoying a beer with their meal after sermon, so can anyone enlighten me what the whole thing is about? Just the big black ghosts again exercising power?

Still stuck in the empire days are you? American English (which, by-the-way, is used as the International Language/English) uses the "z". I hope you have a great day!

I did live in TL many years ago now and never understood this policy. It's the same holiday here in Cambodia and there's none of this nonsense. I'm not a drinker anymore so it doesn't bother me either way, but it's always nice to have the choice to do what you want. Thailand always have had have their 'principles' in the wrong order.
