BANGKOK: -- Couples registering their marriage today will get a chance to win prizes under St Valentine's campaigns. Several authorities, along with their partners, have launched the campaigns.

The Bang Rak District Office of Bangkok, for example, will hold a special event today and hand out a real gold certificate of marriage registration to the first couple who show up at the event to register.

With the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association as a main sponsor, the event will run from 7am to 3pm today at the CAT Telecom building on Charoenkrung Road.

Bang Rak means "Town of Love", so it is a popular place for people to register their marriage.

Couples who show up for marriage registration at the event later in the day stand a chance of winning several other prizes.

Narong Jongjamfah, director of Bangkok's Lak Si District Office, said the fact that St Valentine's Day and the Makha Bucha Day fell on the same date this year made the occasion even more special.

Makha Bucha Day is an important day in Buddhism, and is a national holiday in Thailand.

"A total of 52 couples have already registered their participation in our special marriage-registration event this year," Narong said.

Participating couples will receive gifts and premiums such as gold necklaces, cashier cheques and electrical appliances, he said.

It's also the fifteen day of Chinese New Year. The Lantern Festival! 3 holidays in 1! Very auspicious! Buy some lottery tickets!
